Released Today:

Amazon EC2 Expands Windows and EU Offerings

Starting today, you can now launch Amazon EC2 running Windows or SQL Server instances in the EU Region, enabling you to locate your Windows computing resources close to your European customers/partners, as well as to other AWS computing services (e.g. Amazon S3, Amazon CloudFront). Pay-as-you-go pricing for Amazon EC2 running Windows Server in the EU Region begins at $0.135 per compute hour.

To make it even easier to get started and to manage Amazon EC2, the AWS Management Console has been extended to the EU Region and provides the same features as the US Region, including provisioning and managing Linux/UNIX and Windows instances, Amazon EBS volumes, and Elastic IP addresses.

Finally, Amazon EC2 has also launched an additional Availability Zone for Windows instances in the US Region, making it possible for you to build Windows-based systems that are resilient to failure in a single location.

We are excited to share these new features with you and invite you to visit aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new for full details about this announcement.

News & Announcements

Start Using EC2 with IBM
Amazon EC2 has made several exciting announcements with IBM. You can now bring your own IBM software to Amazon EC2. IBM currently provides several “Development” AMIs (such as IBM DB2 and more) at no additional fee beyond Amazon EC2 charges for developers building commercial IBM-based applications. Later this year, AWS will make available Amazon EC2 “Production” IBM AMIs on a pay-as-you go basis.

Amazon DevPay for Windows and in Europe
Amazon DevPay developers in the US can now build and get paid for Amazon EC2 AMIs running Microsoft Windows Server in the US Region, as well as Windows and Linux/UNIX paid AMIs in the EU Region. This means your customers can run instances of your paid AMIs on all supported operating systems in all Amazon EC2 Regions. Read the release notes.

Monetize your Innovation with Amazon FPS – Get Started Free
Amazon Flexible Payments Service (Amazon FPS) is now generally available and has been made easier to use with Amazon FPS Quick Starts. Quick Starts aggregate various APIs into a simplified set of APIs that substantially reduce the steps to enable payment processing on your website. Also, with a limited time offer, you can build an application using Amazon FPS and get free payment processing for the first 90 days until total transaction volume reaches $500,000. Sign up before March 15 to get this offer.

New SimpleDB Features
Amazon SimpleDB has released two features that add more flexibility to the Select API: count capability and long running query support. Developers may now count the number of items that meet the condition(s) specified by the predicate(s) in a query. Also, SimpleDB now supports queries that take longer than five seconds to complete. Featured Case Study: Zoopla
In the first 12 months since launching on AWS, Zoopla.co.uk estimates it has saved at least £200,000 in the areas of data-centre costs, server cap-ex, server upgrade/maintenance costs, sys admin salaries, network equipment, etc. Read the full story.
