Expanded free support and lower prices on premium support plans
We announced a number of changes to AWS Support; reduced prices, expanded free support with support for health checks, chat, additional 3rd party software support, and a new automated best practice auditing service AWS Trusted Advisor. It is now easier than ever for customers of all sizes and technical abilities to draw on the deep technical experience of AWS Support engineers to help build and manage applications on top of AWS Infrastructure Services. Our new Business-level plan, which provides 24/7/365 support via phone and chat, and a 1 hour response time for email tickets is now starting at $100/month. If you are already a Business-level support subscriber and have not experienced how AWS Trusted Advisor can save your business money, improve system performance, and close security gaps, we encourage you to view your recommendations by visiting the Support Center and selecting Trusted Advisor. For more information on the features and pricing of our support offering, please visit AWS Support.

Introducing High I/O, SSD-based instances for Amazon EC2
Amazon EC2 has announced the availability of High I/O instance for Amazon EC2. High I/O instances are optimized to provide customers with very high, low latency, storage I/O performance using SSD-based, local instance storage. The first High I/O instance type, High I/O Quadruple Extra Large (hi1.4xlarge), can deliver 35 ECUs of CPU performance, has 60.5 GiB of RAM and can deliver over 120,000 4K random read IOPS across 2 * 1024 GiB SSD-based volumes. High I/O instances are idea for databases, and are especially well suited for NoSQL databases like Cassandra and MongoDB. To learn more about High I/O instances and their specifications, please visit the EC2 instance page.

Using Amazon CloudWatch to monitor your Microsoft Windows applications on AWS
You can now use Amazon CloudWatch to monitor your own custom application and instance metrics for Amazon EC2 instances running Microsoft Windows Server. Customers can now refer to and use a sample set of Windows PowerShell scripts to perform activities such as:

  • Collect metrics related to system memory usage and send them to CloudWatch.
  • Collect metrics related to disk usage and send them to CloudWatch.
  • Collect metrics from PerfMon counters and send them to CloudWatch.
  • Query CloudWatch and display the most recent utilization statistics for the instance it was run on.
Some sample scripts are available to download. To learn more about how to use the scripts, please visit "Amazon CloudWatch Monitoring Scripts for Windows" in the Amazon CloudWatch Developer Guide.

CloudWatch metrics for EC2 status checks
We just announced availability of CloudWatch metrics for EC2 status checks. These new CloudWatch metrics let you view graphs, analyze history, and set alarms on your EC2 instance’s status check results. The metrics are free of charge with every EC2 instance and are automatically enabled with free EC2 basic monitoring. CloudWatch metrics for EC2 status checks can be used with CloudWatch alarms to automatically notify you if a status check has detected a problem with your instance. To learn more about CloudWatch metrics for EC2 status checks, see “Monitoring Your Instances and Volumes with CloudWatch”.

AWS Elastic Beanstalk now available in US West (Oregon) and US West (Northern California)
AWS Elastic Beanstalk is now available in the US West (Oregon) and US West (Northern California) regions. Developers can also leverage the service in the US East (North Virginia), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), and EU (Ireland) regions. Elastic Beanstalk currently supports Java applications running on the familiar Apache Tomcat stack, .NET applications running on IIS 7.5, and PHP applications running on the Apache HTTP Server stack. With Elastic Beanstalk, you retain full control over the AWS resources powering your application, such as Amazon EC2 instances, Elastic Load Balancing, and Auto Scaling. To get started, visit the AWS Elastic Beanstalk Developer Guide.

AWS Elastic Beanstalk announces updated Command Line Interface
We are excited to welcome eb (pronounced ee-bee) to the family of Elastic Beanstalk command line tools. Eb simplifies development and deployment tasks from the terminal on Linux, Mac OS, and Microsoft Windows. Getting started is as easy as running eb init, eb start, and git aws.push. Eb guides you through a few questions to configure your Elastic Beanstalk environment. If your source code is managed by Git, eb automatically configures Git to deploy to your Elastic Beanstalk environment. To give eb a try, download the updated Command Line Interface. To learn more about eb, go to "Get Started" in the AWS Elastic Beanstalk Developer Guide.

Announcing multiple IP addresses for Amazon EC2 instances in Amazon VPC
We’d like to introduce multiple IP addresses for Amazon EC2 instances in Amazon VPC. Instances in a VPC can be assigned one or more private IP addresses, each of which can be associated with its own elastic IP address. With this feature you can host multiple websites, including SSL websites and certificates, on a single instance where each site has its own IP address. Private IP addresses and their associated elastic IP addresses can be moved to other network interfaces or instances, assisting with application portability across instances. To learn more about multiple IP addresses, visit the Amazon VPC user guide. For more information about pricing for additional elastic IP addresses on an instance, please see the Amazon EC2 Pricing page.

Amazon SES announces Easy DKIM
Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) is excited to announce Easy DKIM, an easy way to DKIM-sign the email you send via Amazon SES. Previously, you had to DKIM-sign your messages yourself and exclude certain headers, which could be challenging. With Easy DKIM, Amazon SES takes care of DKIM-signing your email for you, and all you have to do is add some CNAME records to your DNS and enable signing. This feature is also integrated with Amazon Route 53 so you can set up Easy DKIM on any domain you manage with Amazon Route 53 with a few clicks of your mouse. For more information, please refer to the Amazon SES Developer Guide.

Amazon DynamoDB Breaks AWS Growth Records
Amazon DynamoDB is the fastest-growing new service in the history of AWS! Learn about how this service is helping power ad campaigns, Facebook apps, social games and more. Read about this incredible growth from the perspective of Amazon.com CTO Werner Vogels and customers like Earth Networks and Halfbrick Studios on Werner’s blog. If you would like to try out Amazon DynamoDB, you can get started for free using DynamoDB’s free tier. Visit the DynamoDB detail page to learn more.

Amazon Elastic MapReduce integrates with HBase, the MapR Distribution for Hadoop
We’re excited to announce support for running Apache HBase 0.92.0 on Amazon Elastic MapReduce, bringing real-time data access to Hadoop in the cloud. HBase is a distributed, column-oriented data store that provides strictly consistent reads and writes, automatic sharding of tables, and efficient storage of large quantities of sparse data. It is built to work seamlessly with Hadoop, sharing its file system and serving as the input and output for MapReduce jobs run in Hadoop. In addition, HBase on EMR provides customers the ability to perform full and incremental backups to Amazon S3 with the option of guaranteed consistency. For more information, please visit "Running HBase" in the EMR Developer's Guide.

Customers can also now run the MapR Distribution for Hadoop on top of Amazon Elastic MapReduce. MapR offers enterprise-focused features for Hadoop such as high availability, data snapshotting, cluster mirroring across AZs, and NFS mounts. Combined with Amazon Elastic MapReduce’s managed Hadoop environment, seamless integration with other AWS services, and hourly pricing with no upfront fees or long-term commitments, Amazon EMR with the MapR Distribution for Hadoop offers customers a powerful tool for generating insights from their data. Please visit the MapR on EMR detail page for more details.

Announcing MFA-protected API access
We’re pleased to announce MFA-protected API access, a new feature of AWS Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). You can now enforce MFA authentication for AWS service APIs via AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) policies. This provides an extra layer of security over powerful operations that you designate, such as terminating Amazon EC2 instances or reading sensitive data stored in Amazon S3.

For more information, please visit the AWS Blog and the documentation.

Amazon CloudFront and Amazon Route 53 announce launch of PoP in Sydney, Australia
We’re excited to announce the launch of our new edge location in Sydney Australia to serve Amazon CloudFront and Amazon Route 53. With the launch in Sydney, our first edge location in Australia, Amazon CloudFront and Amazon Route 53 now have a total of 34 edge locations worldwide. Each new edge location helps lower latency and improves performance for your end users. To learn more about Amazon CloudFront and Amazon Route 53, please visit the detail pages for each service.

New software in AWS Marketplace
AWS Marketplace is an online store where customers can find and buy software that runs in the AWS cloud. Customers can pay by the hour and launch software with 1-Click. We continue to add highly requested products. Some highlights are Porticor’s VPD Appliances and Stingray Traffic Manager from Riverbed software. We also added a listing for hosted Alfresco, provided by Alfresco, as well as new versions of Acunu Reflex, now with Standard, Premium, and Enterprise level support.
