Announcing Provisioned IOPS for Amazon EBS
We are delighted to announce new features for customers looking to run high performance databases in the cloud with the launch of Amazon EBS Provisioned IOPS and EBS-Optimized instances for Amazon EC2. Provisioned IOPS are a new EBS volume type designed to deliver predictable, high performance for I/O intensive workloads, such as database applications, that rely on consistent and fast response times. To enable Amazon EC2 instances to fully utilize the IOPS provisioned on an EBS volume, we’re also introducing the ability to launch selected Amazon EC2 instance types as EBS-Optimized instances. EBS-Optimized instances deliver dedicated throughput between Amazon EC2 and Amazon EBS, with options between 500 Megabits per second and 1,000 Megabits per second depending on the instance type used.

Announcing Management Console and Two New Locations for AWS Direct Connect
We are excited to announce that you can now manage your AWS Direct Connect service through the AWS Management Console. Using the “AWS Direct Connect” tab, you can quickly and easily order new AWS Direct Connect connections or manage existing connections and virtual interfaces. You can also use the AWS Management Console to download router templates customized for your networking equipment. We are also pleased to announce two new AWS Direct Connect locations at CoreSite 32 Avenue of the Americas in New York and Terremark NAP do Brasil in Sao Paulo. These locations serve the US East (Virginia) and South America (Sao Paulo) Regions. Additional AWS Direct Connect locations are planned worldwide in 2012. For more details, including pricing, please refer to the AWS Direct Connect page.

Amazon CloudFront and Amazon Route 53 launch additional PoP in Amsterdam
Amazon CloudFront and Amazon Route 53 now have 34 global PoPs (Points of Presence) with the addition of a second PoP in Amsterdam. The teams have been continuing to build out additional PoPs in several cities. Read more.

Amazon DynamoDB Announces Lower Minimum Provisioned Table Throughput
We have lowered the minimum throughput limits for Amazon DynamoDB. Starting today, you can provision DynamoDB tables with as little as 1 unit of read capacity and 1 unit of write capacity. Amazon DynamoDB provides fast and predictable performance with seamless scalability and enables you to get started for free with the AWS Free Usage Tier. With this change, you can create multiple tables and still use DynamoDB for free provided the total provisioned throughput across all the tables in your account is within the Free Tier usage limits.

New IDC Whitepaper - Business Value of Amazon Web Services Accelerates Over Time
We released a commissioned whitepaper titled The Business Value of Amazon Web Services Accelerates Over Time, authored by IDC analysts Randy Perry and Stephen Hendrick. Based on interviews with 11 customers, IDC found that the five-year TCO of developing, deploying and managing critical applications on AWS represented a 70% savings compared to deploying the same resources on-premises or in hosted environments. In addition, IDC findings show the average five-year ROI of using AWS is 626%. You can read the full report here.

The TCO of Web Applications in the Cloud
Do you know the true cost of running your web applications on your existing infrastructure? This whitepaper will help you understand the different cost factors involved when you deploy and manage a scalable web application in an on-premises environment and compare the total cost to a variety of different AWS purchasing options. Our analysis shows that AWS offers significant cost savings, up to 80%, compared to the equivalent on-premises deployments. Download the whitepaper here.

Secure Microsoft Applications on AWS
This paper provides guidance on how to secure your Microsoft applications on AWS. It outlines the principles for protecting the runtime environment of your Microsoft Windows applications with a focus on risk assessment, reducing attack surface, adhering to the principle of least privilege, and protecting your data. Download the whitepaper here.

New software in AWS Marketplace
AWS Marketplace is an online store where customers can find and buy software that runs in the AWS Cloud. Customers can pay by the hour and launch software with 1-Click. In the last month we’ve added many varied and popular products including TwinStrata CloudArray, Sophos UTM 9, Postgres Plus Cloud Database, and a free version of Sumo Logic’s Log Management and Analytics package.
