Announcing Amazon Glacier, a secure, reliable and extremely low cost storage service designed for data archiving and backup. The service is designed for archive data that is infrequently accessed, such as digital media archives, historical financial and healthcare records, raw genomic sequence data, long-term database backups, and any data that must be retained for regulatory compliance. Customers can reliably and durably store large or small amounts of data for as little as $0.01 per gigabyte per month. You pay only for what you use, and there are no up-front expenses or long-term commitments. Learn More »
Announcing the Amazon EC2 reserved instance marketplace
We are excited to introduce the Reserved Instance Marketplace, an online marketplace that provides AWS customers the flexibility to sell their Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) Reserved Instances to other businesses and organizations. The Reserved Instance Marketplace gives you the flexibility to sell the remainder of your existing Reserved Instances as your needs change. Customers can also browse the Reserved Instance Marketplace to find an even wider selection of Reserved Instance term lengths and pricing options sold by other AWS customers. Learn More »
Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) support on Amazon S3
AWS Billing Enables Cost Allocation Reports
Cost Allocation Reports, a new AWS billing feature that enables you to organize and track your AWS costs using tagging. Tags represent your business dimensions and are used in your cost allocation report. As of today, you can tag resources for the following services: EC2, EBS, S3, RDS, VPC and CloudFormation. Auto Scaling introduces new Termination Policies
You can now choose which Amazon EC2 instances Auto Scaling should select for termination when reducing the number of instances in your Auto Scaling group or rebalancing your group across availability zones. For example, you can now choose to terminate the oldest or newest instance in the group, or the instance that is nearest to approaching the next instance-hour. Learn More »
Announcing IPsec VPN and Route Propagation Support for Amazon VPC
You can now create IPsec VPN connections to Amazon VPC using static routing configurations. Before today, VPN connections required the use of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). We now support both types of connections and are excited to announce that you can now establish connectivity from devices that do not support BGP, including Cisco ASA and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2.
Additionally, you can now configure automatic propagation of routes from your VPN and Direct Connect links to your VPC routing tables. This feature simplifies the effort to create and maintain connectivity to Amazon VPC. Learn More »
New Region Support and VPC Support for Cluster GPU instances
Customers use Amazon EC2 Cluster GPU instances for a range of applications that benefit from the massive parallel processing capabilities of GPUs for high performance general purpose computing. Examples of common use cases include rendering, molecular modeling, engineering design, computer vision and transcoding. We are very excited to announce that the high parallel computing capabilities of Cluster GPU instances are now available for customers in the EU (Ireland) region. We are also adding the ability to launch Cluster GPU instances inside Amazon VPC in all supported regions.
Customers can launch instances as On Demand, Reserved or Spot instances in two regions in the EU (Ireland) region. To find out more about Cluster GPU instances, visit the Amazon EC2 instance type page.
Amazon CloudFront announces several new features and adds Madrid Edge Location
Amazon CloudFront is excited to announce several new features along with the launch of a new edge location in Madrid, Spain. First, Amazon CloudFront now supports delivery of dynamic content that is customized or personalized using HTTP cookies. Second, Amazon CloudFront has introduced Price Classes which is an optional feature that provides you more control over the prices you pay to deliver content out of Amazon CloudFront by excluding Amazon CloudFront’s more expensive edge locations from your Amazon CloudFront distribution. Finally, we have added new fields to Amazon CloudFront access log files download distributions. These fields include the cookie header in the request, the result type of a request (cache hit/miss/error enabling you to calculate hit ratios) and the value of X-Amz-Cf-Id for that request (this is an encrypted string that uniquely identifies a request to help AWS troubleshoot/debug issues.
For more information on cookie support, price classes and the new additions to the log files, you can read Jeff Barr's blog post or visit the CloudFront detail page.
Announcing Provisioned IOPS for Amazon EBS
We are delighted to announce new features for customers looking to run high performance databases in the cloud with the launch of Amazon EBS Provisioned IOPS and EBS-Optimized instances for Amazon EC2. Provisioned IOPS are a new EBS volume type designed to deliver predictable, high performance for I/O intensive workloads, such as database applications, that rely on consistent and fast response times. With EBS Provisioned IOPS, customers can flexibly specify both volume size and volume performance, and Amazon EBS will consistently deliver the desired performance over the lifetime of the volume. Customers can then attach multiple volumes to an Amazon EC2 instance and stripe across them to deliver thousands of IOPS to their application. To enable Amazon EC2 instances to fully utilize the IOPS provisioned on an EBS volume, we’re also introducing the ability to launch selected Amazon EC2 instance types as EBS-Optimized instances. EBS-Optimized instances deliver dedicated throughput between Amazon EC2 and Amazon EBS, with options between 500 Megabits per second and 1,000 Megabits per second depending on the instance type used. To learn more about EBS Provisioned IOPS, see the Amazon EBS detail page.
DynamoDB now supports Binary Data Types
DynamoDB has added support for Binary Data Types. Customers can use the new data types to make DynamoDB even more cost-efficient. Learn more here: http://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2012/08/21/dynamodb-announces-binary-data-types/
DynamoDB announces In-Console Item Editing

Amazon RDS for Oracle now supports Data Pump for easier Import/Export
We are excited to announce the availability of Data Pump for Amazon RDS for Oracle. Oracle Data Pump provides fast data movement between Oracle databases, much faster than the original Export and Import utilities. Data Pump makes it easy to import your data into Amazon RDS (or export out of Amazon RDS) from both on-premise databases and databases running on Amazon EC2. We currently support the network mode of Data Pump where the job source is an Oracle database.
Amazon RDS for SQL Server now supports Amazon VPC
We are excited to announce Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) support for Amazon RDS for SQL Server. With Amazon VPC you can launch new RDS instances running SQL Server in a virtual network that you define.
You can now take advantage of the manageability, availability and scalability benefits of Amazon RDS for SQL Server in your own isolated network. The same functionality of Amazon RDS including managing backups, automatic failure detection and recovery, software patching and ease of scaling your compute capacity based on your application demand, are now available in Amazon VPC.
Four New Trusted Advisor Recommendations
AWS Support is excited to announce additional checks this month for AWS Trusted Advisor, a service available to Business-level or greater support subscribers. Recommendations have been added for EC2 Reserved Instance Optimization, VPN Tunnel Redundancy, RDS Backup, RDS Multi-AZ, and we have also expanded Service Limits to include EBS. Since its launch in June, customers have taken action over 50,000 times based on Trusted Advisor’s recommendations. Additionally, Support for Health Checks (SHC) has been expanded for Basic-level support to allow all AWS customers to open support tickets for EBS volumes with I/O disabled.
