Announcing AWS Elastic Beanstalk Support for Tomcat 7

Posted on: May 5, 2011

We are excited to announce that AWS Elastic Beanstalk supports Tomcat 7. Starting today, you can launch Tomcat 7 environments and deploy applications that use the latest Servlet 3.0 specifications, JSP 2.2 and JSP-EL 2.2. Click here to learn about AWS Elastic Beanstalk.

The AWS Toolkit for Eclipse also supports a new server type called "AWS Elastic Beanstalk for Tomcat 7". Click here for more information on using the AWS Toolkit for Eclipse with Elastic Beanstalk.

Tomcat 7 is now the default for new environments. Since this is a major revision of Tomcat, your existing environments will not be changed and you may continue to choose Tomcat 6 for new environments. To launch a new Tomcat 7 environment, simply complete the following steps:

  1. In the AWS Management Console, make sure the application you’d like to migrate is selected.
  2. Click on Launch New Environment in the top right corner.
  3. From the Select an existing application version drop down, choose the application version that you’d like to run on Tomcat 7.
  4. From the Container Type drop-down, select the Tomcat 7 container that best fits your application and complete the rest of the wizard with the settings that work for your application.
