Introducing AWS DataSync: A Service to Simplify, Automate, and Accelerate Online Data Transfer

Posted on: Nov 26, 2018

AWS DataSync is an online data transfer service that makes it easy for you to automate movement of data between on-premises storage and Amazon S3 or Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS). DataSync uses a purpose-built protocol to accelerate and secure data transfer over the Internet or AWS Direct Connect, at speeds up to 10 times faster than open-source tools.

DataSync uses an on-premises software agent to connect to your existing storage, and a fully managed in-cloud service to automate, scale, and validate transfers, so you don’t have write scripts, modify your applications, or manage infrastructure. Using DataSync you can perform one-time data migrations, transfer on-premises data for timely in-cloud analysis, and automate replication to AWS for data protection and recovery.

Getting started is easy: Deploy the DataSync agent on-premises, connect it to your file systems using the Network File System (NFS) protocol, select Amazon EFS or S3 as your AWS storage, and start moving data. With DataSync, you pay only for the data copied to or from S3 or EFS. There are no upfront costs and no minimum fees. DataSync is available in 10 regions, US East (N. Virginia and Ohio), US West (N. California and Oregon), Europe (Frankfurt and Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Seoul, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo).
