A video that walks through how to customize an existing Amazon Machine Image (AMI).

Customize an Existing AMI

Approximately 15 minutes.

The purpose of this tutorial is to walk thru customizing an existing AMI, or Amazon Machine Image, in order that you can understand what is involved before you try it yourself. We'll make a small change, then save the AMI as a private image for future use. The finished image will not be visible to anyone else, unless of course you choose to explicitly share it.

The video was created using Windows; however any operating system works the same, because the command line tools run under Java.

There's a short list of things that we won't cover in this video.

  • This video will not show you how to create an AMI from scratch
  • And it will not show you how to upload an image created locally on your PC
  • We're assuming that you already watched the video on how to set up Amazon EC2.

Great for Modifying An Existing Image from the Library
But we really need two things additionally - How to bundle an image you have locally - I did it, instanciated it, but cannot connect to it. How to debug the inability to either run or connect to a custom image. Thanks...

Excellent video
I just spent most of my day figuring this out using AWS documentation. This and you other video 'Setting up and Running Amazon EC2 from Windows' cover most of the same material in a very easy to follow manner. Helped me to fix a couple of issues very quickly. Thanks! and pls make more.

I think it's excellent
Thank you for making the video - I'm a very fast learner for visual things and I find that written docs only make sense to me AFTER I've already learned the thing. Usually the written stuff is too verbose for a newbie who wants a simple step by step (half of the explanations are confusing because they are over one's head). I prefer a 'show me how to get it going' first, then I will start getting to know the concepts as I have to work with it in more depth. Thank you - this video gives me exactly that.

Thanks for the great video. I was expecting a lot worse based on the previous comments but it was much better. It helped me with a bundling step that I was missing all along but finally figured out after seeing it being done in the video. :)

Garbled soundtrack, and why is it a video?
This video will get you there, but like most online videos, the signal-to-noise ratio is low. This should have been a simple HTML page, which would make it easier for readers to skim the article, archive it, and read it offline. More importantly, it would be possible to copy text commands from a text version. I dinged it an extra star because although it remains intelligible, the soundtrack is badly garbled.

The title is wrong
The title should be 'Customize an existing AMI' instead of 'Create Your Own Customized AMI'.
