As part of the AWS Free Tier, the Amazon ElastiCache Free Usage Tier helps new AWS customers get started with a managed caching service in the cloud for free. Customers eligible for the AWS Free Usage tier can now use up to 750 hours per month of a t1.micro Cache node. You can use the Amazon ElastiCache Free Usage Tier to develop new applications, test existing applications, or simply gain hands-on experience with Amazon ElastiCache.
Each calendar month, the free usage tier will allow you to use the following Amazon ElastiCache resources for free:
The AWS Free Tier is only available to existing AWS customers who have signed-up for Free Tier after October 20, 2010 and new AWS customers, and is available for 12 months following your AWS sign-up date. When your free usage expires or if your application use exceeds the free usage tiers, you simply pay standard, pay-as-you-go service rates (see Amazon ElastiCache pricing page for full pricing details). The free usage tier applies to these AWS regions: US East (Northern Virginia), US West (Oregon), US West (Northern California), EU (Ireland), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney), and South America (Sao Paulo). Your usage is calculated each month across these regions and automatically applied to your bill. For example, you will receive 750 Micro Cache Node hours for free across these Regions, not 750 hours per Region. Note that free usage does not accumulate.
Amazon ElastiCache improves the performance of your web applications by retrieving data from a fast, in-memory cache instead of relying entirely on disk-based storage. Unlike other caching mechanisms, Amazon ElastiCache is fully-managed so you don’t have to worry about maintaining your own caching infrastructure. In addition, it is Memcached-compatible, so if you have existing Memcached-enabled applications, they should work with ElastiCache without any code changes.
