Amazon Elastic MapReduce (EMR) is a web service that enables cost-effective analysis of vast amounts of data. It utilizes a hosted Hadoop framework running on Amazon's cloud computing and storage services. Our customers (including Netflix, Yelp, and Airbnb) rely on EMR to process petabytes of data across thousands of machines. To learn more about EMR click here.

As a Software Development Engineer on EMR, you will help design and implement systems that run smoothly at massive scale (think hundreds of thousands of cores). You'll gain firsthand experience with an expert engineering team and passionate leaders while working on complex distributed systems and service oriented architectures. You'll work both independently and with other software engineers and product managers to create distributed services and front-end APIs for our customers.
We're looking for engineers with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science (or equivalent experience), experience with object-oriented languages, and a strong interest in distributed systems programming. The ideal candidate will have a Master’s Degree in Computer Science; experience with Hadoop, HBase, or HPC technologies; a strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and asynchronous architectures; experience with large scale distributed systems; strong knowledge of Java and/or C++; and experience with XML, HTTP, and SOAP. As a Software Development Manager on EMR you will build, manage, focus, and mentor one of our engineering teams. You will actively participate in hiring talented people, guide the career development of others, play a critical role in developing our strategy, work closely with senior executives to develop business targets and resource requirements, contribute to Amazon’s intellectual property through patents and/or external publications; and help manage our rapidly increasing scale.
We’re looking for managers with proven experience leading engineering teams. You should have a minimum of 7 years of software development experience plus at least 3 years spent in a leadership/management role. You should have a proven track record of shipping high quality software on time; possesses a strong understanding of the Big Data or HPC market; be able to engage with customers and participate in roadmap prioritization; be adept in software development and experienced in the processes around it; be experienced in using various software development methodologies; and have a proven track record of building and managing high performing engineering teams. The ideal candidate will have experience with data processing systems such as Hadoop; experience with any of the popular relational databases and data warehouses; a strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive; a demonstrated ability to achieve stretch goals in a highly innovative and fast paced environment; and a BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent. As a Product Manager on EMR you will be deeply involved in defining and driving EMR’s product strategy and roadmap. This is a highly visible position; you will work closely with customers, engineers, and senior leaders at AWS. In addition to new features, you will be responsible for driving product positioning, pricing, customer engagement, business metrics, partner management, etc.
We’re looking for someone with a Bachelor’s Degree who is a broad leader: part builder, part operator, and part general manager. You should be able to prioritize well, communicate clearly and compellingly and know how to drive a high level of focus and excellence with a strong, talented, opinionated team.
