Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) Pricing

Choose from a wide variety of instance types and procurement methods to best suit your compute needs. The Amazon EC2 provides additional detail and information.

On-Demand Instances let you utilize compute capacity by the hour with no long-term commitments. This frees you from the costs and complexities of planning, purchasing, and maintaining hardware and transforms what are commonly large fixed costs into much smaller variable costs. Pricing is per instance-hour consumed for each instance, from the time an instance is launched until it is terminated. Each partial instance-hour consumed will be billed as a full hour. The pricing below includes the cost to run private and public AMIs on the specified operating system (“Windows Usage” prices apply to Windows Server 2003 R2, 2008, 2008 R2 and 2012, "Windows with SQL Server Standard" applies to Windows Server running Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition, and "Windows with SQL Server Web" applies to Windows Server running Microsoft SQL Server Web Edition).

Reserved Instances* (“RIs”) allow you to make a low, one-time payment to reserve instance capacity and further reduce the hourly charge for that instance. There are multiple Reserved Instance types shown below that enable you to balance the amount you pay upfront with your effective hourly price. Additional details are available at Amazon EC2 Reserved Instances.

  • Light Utilization RIs offer the lowest upfront payment of all of the Reserved Instance types. Along with this low upfront payment, you’ll receive a significantly discounted hourly usage fee. Light Utilization RIs allow you to turn off your instance at any point and not pay the hourly fee. Light Utilization RIs are ideal for periodic workloads that only run a couple of hours a day, a few days per week, or very sporadically (like Disaster Recovery where they hardly ever are needed, but when they are, you must be sure you have the reserved capacity to handle). Using Light Utilization RIs, you can save up to 30% for a 1-year term and 49% for a 3-year term vs. running On- Demand Instances. The break-even point for a Light Utilization Linux RI (vs. On-Demand Instances) is 28% for a 1-year term or 11% of a 3-year term. If you expect to use your instance more than that, an RI will save you money.
  • Medium Utilization RIs are the exact same Reserved Instances that EC2 has offered for the last several years. They have a higher upfront payment than Light Utilization RIs, but a much lower hourly usage fee. Medium Utilization RIs allow you to turn off your instance at any point and not pay the hourly fee. Medium Utilization RIs are best suited for workloads that run most of the time, but have some variability in usage (like web server traffic where demand may increase or decrease throughout the year). Using Medium Utilization RIs, you can save up to 39% for a 1-year term and 59% for a 3-year term vs. running On-Demand Instances. The break-even point for a Medium Utilization Linux RI (vs. Light Utilization Reserved Instances) is 41% for a 1-year term or 19% of a 3-year term. If you expect to use your instance more than that, an RI will save you money.
  • Heavy Utilization RIs offer the most absolute savings of any Reserved Instance type. They’re most appropriate for steady-state workloads where you’re willing to commit to always running these instances in exchange for our lowest hourly usage fee. With this RI, you pay a little higher upfront payment than Medium Utilization RIs, a significantly lower hourly usage fee, and you’re charged that lower hourly rate for every hour in the Reserved Instance term you purchase. Using Heavy Utilization RIs, you can save up to 45% for a 1-year term and 65% for a 3-year term vs. running On-Demand Instances. The break-even point for a Heavy Utilization Linux RIs (vs. Medium Utilization Reserved Instances) is 56% for a 1-year term or 35% of a 3-year term. If you expect to use your instance more than that, an RI will save you money.
  • Fixed Price Reserved Instances give you the option to make a one-time fixed payment for each instance you want to reserve. After the one-time payment for an instance, you will have no further usage charges to run that instance for the duration of your term. Reserved Instances can be purchased for 1 or 3-year terms, and the one-time fee per instance is non-refundable.
* If Microsoft chooses to increase the license fees that it charges for Windows or SQL Server, we may correspondingly increase the one-time fee for previously purchased Fixed Price Reserved Instances with Windows or SQL Server and the Usage Price for Light, Medium, and Heavy Utilization Reserved Instances with Windows or SQL Server. Any such changes would be made between Dec 1st and Jan 31th, and with at least 30 days' notice. If an additional one-time fee is required, you may continue to use your Fixed Price Reserved Instance with Windows or SQL Server or request a pro rata refund of the upfront fee you paid for the Fixed Price Reserved Instance with Windows or SQL Server. If an additional usage fee is required, you may continue to use your Reserved Instance with Windows or SQL Server with the new per-hour usage rate, convert your Reserved Instance with Windows or SQL Server to a Reserved Instance with Linux, or request a pro rata refund of the upfront fee you paid for the Reserved Instance with Windows or SQL Server.

See Amazon EC2 Instance types for a detailed description of the differences between available instance types.

For example, as soon as you have active Reserved Instances with total list price of upfront fees totaling more than $250,000 in a single AWS Region, you will automatically receive a 10% discount on both upfront and hourly fees for all future Reserved Instance purchases in that AWS Region, and those discounts will continue to apply to new Reserved Instances as long as you continue to qualify for the discount tier.

To illustrate, let's assume you currently have $200,000 worth of active Reserved Instances in GovCloud. You purchase 75 Reserved Instances at $1000 each. That's a total of $75,000. The first $50,000 of this purchase would be discounted at 0 percent. The remaining $25,000 of your purchase will be discounted by 10 percent, so you will only be charged $22,500 for it, and you will pay discounted hourly fees on those Reserved Instances.

To learn more about Reserved Instance Tiers, please visit the “Understanding Reserved Instance Tiers” portion of the Amazon EC2 User Guide.

Elastic IP Addresses

You can have one Elastic IP address associated with a running instance at no charge. If you associate additional EIPs with that instance, you will be charged for each additional EIP associated with that instance per hour on a pro rata basis. Additional EIPs are only available in Amazon VPC.

To ensure efficient use of Elastic IP addresses, we impose a small hourly charge when these IP addresses are not associated with a running instance or when they are associated with a stopped instance or unattached network interface.

  • $0.00 for one Elastic IP address associated with a running instance
  • $0.01 per additional Elastic IP address associated with a running instance per hour
  • $0.01 per Elastic IP address not associated with a running instance per hour
  • $0.00 per Elastic IP address remap – first 100 remaps per month
  • $0.10 per Elastic IP address remap – additional remap per month over 100

Amazon Simple Workflow Service (beta) Pricing

Pay only for what you use. There is no minimum fee. Estimate your monthly bill using the Simple Monthly Calculator.

Workflow Executions

A workflow is a set of tasks executed in a certain order (sometimes with a set of conditional flows or loops). Each time that a workflow is executed, it is considered a distinct workflow execution. You pay for workflow executions when you start them (i.e. their first task becomes available for application hosts to execute) and for each 24-hour period until they are completed.

Tasks, Markers, Timers and Signals

Until a workflow execution is completed, your worker or client machines will execute additional tasks, may add “markers” (custom workflow execution log entries), start timers, or receive signals. For each of these you pay:

Example Cost Calculation

To illustrate Amazon SWF pricing, consider a simple video processing application with three tasks: download a video, encode it, and store the encoded video in Amazon S3. This application is used to encode 10,000 videos, each of which comprises a unique workflow execution. The workers and deciders in this application are all running on Amazon EC2 in the AWS GovCloud (US) Region. The cost incurred for running 10,000 workflow executions of this workflow daily is $2.10 as follows:

  • $1.20 for starting 10,000 workflow executions (10,000 x $0.00012)
  • $0.90 for initiating tasks ($0.000030 per task x 3 tasks per workflow execution x 10,000 workflow executions)
  • We assume a video can be encoded and uploaded to S3 in less than 24 hours. As a result the workflow execution completes within 24 hours of being started and there is no ongoing workflow execution charge.

Let’s suppose you also want to have Amazon SWF retain information about the encoding workflow executions for 7 days after they complete. The cost for retaining information about the workflow executions is $0.42 ($0.000006 per day per execution x 7 workflow-days of retention x 10,000 workflow executions).

In total the Amazon SWF cost to coordinate the encoding and uploading of 10,000 videos and to retain information about the associated workflow executions and processing steps for 7 days is: $2.52 ($2.10 for running the workflow executions + $0.42 for retaining information on them).

Data Transfer

Pricing details for data transfer rates in and out of AWS GovCloud (US) can be found in GovCloud Pricing in the Data Transfer tab or on the AWS GovCloud (US) Full Pricing List in the Data Transfer Section.

DB Instances (Bring Your Own License or BYOL)

Microsoft’s License Mobility program (referred to henceforth as Bring Your Own License or "BYOL") allows customers who already own SQL Server licenses to run SQL Server deployments on Amazon RDS. This benefit is available to Microsoft Volume Licensing (VL) customers with SQL Server licenses (currently including Standard and Enterprise Editions) covered by active Microsoft Software Assurance (SA) contracts. The Microsoft License Mobility program is suited for customers who prefer to use existing SQL Server licenses or purchase new licenses directly from Microsoft or any other reseller. To run a DB Instance under the BYOL model, you must meet the eligibility requirements and follow the Sign Up process laid out here. You must also have the appropriate SQL Server licenses with Software Assurance for the DB Instance class and SQL Server edition you wish to run, and must adhere to Microsoft’s licensing policies.

Database Storage

Standard Storage

For each DB Instance class, Amazon RDS provides you the ability to select from 5 GB to 1 TB of associated storage capacity for your primary data set.

Standard Deployment

Multi-AZ Deployment*

When you run your DB Instance as a Multi-AZ deployment for enhanced data durability and availability, Amazon RDS provisions and maintains a standby in a different Availability Zone for automatic failover in the event of planned or unplanned outages.

* For Multi-AZ deployments, when you update your database, write I/O usage will double as Amazon RDS synchronously replicates your data to the standby DB instance. Read I/O usage will remain the same when reading from the database.

Backup Storage

Backup storage is the storage associated with your automated database backups and any user-initiated DB Snapshots you have taken. Increasing your backup retention period or taking additional database snapshots increases the backup storage consumed by your database.

  • There is no additional charge for backup storage up to 100% of your provisioned database storage for an active DB Instance.* After the DB Instance is terminated, backup storage is billed at $0.125 per GB-month.
  • Additional backup storage: $0.125 per GB-month

* For example, if you have an active DB Instance with 10GB-month of provisioned database storage, we will provide up to 10GB-month of backup storage at no additional charge. Based upon our experience as database administrators, the vast majority of databases require less raw storage for a backup than for the primary data set, meaning that most customers will never pay for backup storage.

Data Transfer

At this time, you will not be billed for data transfer charges "in and "out" of Amazon RDS. When we begin billing for data transfer charges, the pricing below reflects the rates that you will be billed for data transferred “in” and “out” of Amazon RDS.

Data Transfer

Pricing details for data transfer rates in and out of AWS GovCloud (US) can be found in GovCloud Pricing in the Data Transfer tab or on the AWS GovCloud (US) Full Pricing List in the Data Transfer Section.

Data Transfer details specific to Amazon RDS:

  • Data transferred between Amazon RDS and Amazon EC2 Instances in the same Availability Zone is free.
  • Data transferred between Availability Zones for replication of Multi-AZ deployments is free.

Amazon DynamoDB (beta) Pricing

Provisioned Throughput Capacity

When you create or update your Amazon DynamoDB table, you specify how much capacity you wish to reserve for reads and writes. Amazon DynamoDB will reserve the necessary machine resources to meet your throughput needs with consistent, low-latency performance.

You pay a flat, hourly rate based on the capacity you reserve:

Pricing
  • Write Throughput: $0.00780 per hour for every 10 units of Write Capacity
  • Read Throughput: $0.00780 per hour for every 50 units of Read Capacity

A unit of Write Capacity enables you to perform one write per second for items of up to 1KB in size. Similarly, a unit of Read Capacity enables you to perform one strongly consistent read per second (or two eventually consistent reads per second) of items of up to 1KB in size. Larger items will require more capacity. You can calculate the number of units of read and write capacity you need by estimating the number of reads or writes you need to do per second and multiplying by the size of your items (rounded up to the nearest KB).

Units of Capacity required for writes = Number of item writes per second x item size (rounded up to the nearest KB)

Units of Capacity required for reads¹ = Number of item reads per second x item size (rounded up to the nearest KB)

¹If you use eventually consistent reads you’ll get twice the throughput in terms of reads per second.

If your items are less than 1KB in size, then each unit of Read Capacity will give you 1 read/second of capacity and each unit of Write Capacity will give you 1 write/second of capacity. For example, if your items are 512 bytes and you need to read 100 items per second from your table, then you need to provision 100 units of Read Capacity.

If your items are larger than 1KB in size, then you should calculate the number of units of Read Capacity and Write Capacity that you need. For example, if your items are 1.5KB and you want to do 100 reads/second, then you would need to provision 100 (read per second) x 2 (1.5KB rounded up to the nearest whole number) = 200 units of Read Capacity.

Note that the required number of units of Read Capacity is determined by the number of items being read per second, not the number of API calls. For example, if you need to read 500 items per second from your table, and if your items are 1KB or less, then you need 500 units of Read Capacity. It doesn’t matter if you do 500 individual GetItem calls or 50 BatchGetItem calls that each return 10 items.

If your request throughput exceeds your provisioned capacity, it may be throttled. However, the AWS Management Console charts your provisioned and utilized throughput capacity, and lets you make changes easily in anticipation of traffic changes. To learn more about provisioned throughput and selecting the appropriate values, read the DynamoDB FAQ.

To learn more about estimating how many capacity units you need for your table, read the DynamoDB documentation.

Indexed Data Storage

Pricing
  • $0.30 per GB-month

Amazon DynamoDB is an indexed datastore, and the amount of disk space your data consumes will exceed the raw size of the data you have uploaded. Amazon DynamoDB measures the size of your billable data by adding up the raw byte size of the data you upload, plus a per-item storage overhead of 100 bytes to account for indexing. You do not need to “provision” storage with Amazon DynamoDB. You are simply billed for what you use, as described above.

Reserved Capacity

1 yr Term 3 yr Term
Monthly Committment Upfront Hourly Upfront Hourly
5,000 Write Capacity Units $9,000.00 $0.7730 $10,800.00 $0.4890
5,000 Read Capacity Units $1,800.00 $0.1550 $2,160.00 $0.0978

Reserved Capacity pricing offers significant savings over the normal price of DynamoDB provisioned throughput capacity. When you buy Reserved Capacity, you pay a one-time upfront fee and commit to paying for a minimum usage level, at the hourly rates indicated above, for the duration of the Reserved Capacity term. Using Reserved Capacity pricing, you can save up to 53% with a 1-year term and up to 76% with a 3-year term. To purchase Reserved Capacity, contact your AWS GovCloud (US) Business Representative. To learn more about Reserved Capacity, please read the DynamoDB FAQ.
