Amazon EC2 helps you to leverage IBM-based environments for a variety of use cases, including:

Steady State Usage

Amazon EC2 is the ideal environment for running IBM-based applications that always need to be available. Amazon EC2 enables you to migrate your existing IBM licenses and install them on an Amazon EC2 instance or use Amazon EC2 running IBM with AMIs ready to launch. Both options allow you to customize your mission-critical applications and seamlessly integrate with all of the existing Amazon EC2 features.

On-Demand Usage

Amazon EC2 running IBM enables you to take advantage of cost-effective, pay-as-you-go pricing, perfect for scaling up or down the number of instances to meet your workload demands. There are no long-term commitments or contracts, unlike purchasing a traditional license. For example, if you already owned existing licenses but needed to temporarily scale above that limit you could launch instances during your peak demand and eliminate those instances when your demand decreased. Alternatively, if you have an unpredictable or variable workload, you can reduce your costs by using Amazon EC2 running IBM just when you need it. In both cases, you would only pay for the instance-hours that you used.

Proof-of-Concept Development

Many projects begin by creating an environment to test a particular use-case before any significant investment is made. Amazon EC2 is perfect for this prototyping process. If you are a traditional business, you can start by using Amazon EC2 running IBM and pay for what you use. If you are an Independent Software Vendor (ISV) creating commercially available services, IBM provides Development AMIs are at no additional fee beyond normal Amazon EC2 usage charges. In either scenario, you can start Amazon EC2 instances running IBM AMIs in minutes just using a credit card. If you choose to transition the prototype into a longer term project you can continue to run them on Amazon EC2 running IBM or purchase licenses through your traditional sales channel.

Bringing Your Own IBM Licenses

If you already have an existing IBM license, you may also have the ability to run that license in Amazon EC2 and you will simply pay our normal Amazon EC2 hourly prices for On-Demand or Reserved Instances. To get started, perform the following steps:

1. Use IBM’s Processor Value Unit (PVU) conversion table to determine how your existing licenses may apply to the various EC2 instance types.
2. Install the desired IBM software with the appropriate number of licenses on your Amazon EC2 instance.
3. Run and manage your instance like any other Amazon EC2 instance.

Getting Started with Amazon EC2 running IBM

To get started using Amazon EC2 running IBM, perform the following steps:

1. Choose the AMI you want to start and write down the AMI ID
2. Open and log into the AWS Management Console, ElasticFox, or other Management Console of your choice
3. Search for the AMI ID on the AMI tab
4. Right click on the AMI to start an instance
5. Start using your instance! Detailed getting started guides for each AMI can be found on their AMI Catalog Entry page. To find the catalog entry click on the appropriate link in the section below.
