HIRING: Build bleeding edge status monitoring systems on a massive scale for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)

Members of this team have the opportunity to work with some of the smartest software engineers in the industry to deliver significant impact for the Amazon EC2 business by providing customers with the status of their instances. The team is tasked with working on the scale of the entire Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud to monitor all instances worldwide, efficiently consume this data and provide status to customers in a timely fashion.

This position is for our development center in the amazing city of Cape Town, to help build and manage our Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) service. Amazon EC2 forms part of Amazon Web Services (AWS), which provide developers with a highly reliable, scalable, low-cost infrastructure platform in the cloud that powers hundreds of thousands of businesses in 190 countries around the world. The Cape Town based Development Center plays a key role in building and running the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2).

We are looking for passionate, experienced Java, Ruby, Scala or C/C++ software developers that can design and deliver high quality solutions in a hyper-growth environment where priorities shift fast. Developers on this team need a sound understanding of the fundamentals of Computer Science and practical experience building large-scale distributed systems. You should be someone who enjoys working on complex system software, is very customer-centric, and feels strongly not only about building good software but about making that software achieve its goals in operational reality. Experience with web-based applications and/or web services-based applications, especially at massive scale, is also helpful.

As general guidance, we’re looking for people with the following characteristics:

• Strong desire to build, sense of ownership, urgency, and drive
• Experience with Java, Ruby, Scala or C/C++
• Expertise in delivering high-quality, innovative applications
• 4 year University Degree or Masters in Computer Science or equivalent (PhD a plus)
• 3-5+ years of industry experience
• Demonstrated ability to achieve stretch goals in a highly innovative and fast paced environment
• Experience with development on Linux
• Strong analytical skills with excellent problem solving abilities
• Knowledge of system performance methodologies along with hands on empirical monitoring
• Experience with big data and machine learning a plus
• Excellent written communication and verbal agility are strong assets
