Announcing VM Export for Amazon EC2

Posted on: May 25, 2012

We are excited to announce that you can now easily export EC2 instances that you previously imported with VM Import to your on-premise virtualization infrastructure. VM Import enables you to easily import virtual machine images from your existing virtualization environment to Amazon EC2 instances, allowing you to leverage your existing investments in the virtual machines that you have built to meet your IT security, configuration management, and compliance requirements. With VM Export, you can now export these EC2 instances back to your on-premise infrastructure, enabling you to seamlessly deploy and move your workload between your IT infrastructure and the AWS cloud.

This feature is available at no additional charge beyond standard usage charges for Amazon S3 and EBS.

The VM Export process currently supports VMware VMDK images, VMware OVA images, Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix Xen VHD images for Windows Server 2003 R2 and 2008 R1 and R2. We plan to support additional operating systems, image formats and virtualization platforms in the future. To learn more about VM Import/Export, visit the VM Import/Export detail page.
