AWS Case Study: TriSys Business Software Reaches Small Businesses from the Cloud

TriSys Business Software supplies recruiting software and hosting systems to recruitment companies, designing software solutions that automate many functions of the recruiting process to address the needs of its target industry. Based in Cambridge, England, and with only 15 employees, the company has built its client base to 600 customers (more than 7,500 users) in 12 countries around the world.

The earlier version of the TriSys solution used an on-premise philosophy, where customers maintained their own local area networks and servers on site. Although the on-premise philosophy worked well for larger recruiting agencies, it was financially prohibitive for small firms and startup entrepreneurs.

Recognizing a need for more flexibility and lower costs, “we started thinking about providing a low-cost virtual office environment for start-up or small recruitment agencies,” explains Garry Lowther, CEO of TriSys Business Software. This concept evolved into TriSys Application Service Provider (ASP), a “software-plus-service approach” that gives customers the ability to download applications to a local device or connect to data services via a remote desktop, instead.

Customers purchase the TriSys ASP applications on a subscription basis. When the applications are downloaded from the TriSys Web site or an App Store, they can be easily installed on a computer, netbook, phone, or PDA. As a result, even the smallest recruiting firm can realize opportunities.

Initially, TriSys Business Software used hosted, managed services. However, when fluctuating business needs required additional servers or the removal of obsolete servers, the flexibility and control that TriSys needed to meet the varied needs of its clients was just not available. TriSys turned to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

TriSys employs dozens of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) servers in western Europe and the eastern United States to host and manage its customers’ data and business services. Customer data are remotely stored in Amazon data centers, which provide “massive benefits for entrepreneurs entering the world of recruitment, because they don’t have to procure hardware, software, or IT services,” states Lowther. TriSys also uses Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for storage and the AWS SDK for .NET to incorporate monitoring and firewall functionality. The remaining component of this integrated solution is Microsoft Visual Studio.NET (C# and Microsoft Visual Basic.NET), the language on which TriSys ASP is based.

Simon Crow, Managing Director of Victoria Wall Associates, clearly believes that the AWS solution is working for TriSys. Headquartered in London, England, Victoria Wall Associates has worked with TriSys for three years. Simon says that “the technology is always moving forward, always improving, and with TriSys ASP, we have instant access to the latest versions. We simply can’t operate without immediate access to our data from anywhere at any time and TriSys ASP helps us achieve this.” TriSys and AWS offer the recruiting industry a cost-effective and flexible product that can be used by recruiting firms of all sizes.
