With AWS Elemental MediaConvert, you can choose from on-demand pricing, reserved pricing, or a combination of the two, depending on your workload and video transcoding requirements.

  • On-Demand pricing: You pay only for what you use and there are no minimum fees. Charges are based on a simple fee per minute of video in each output. On-demand pricing has two tiers: Basic, which is lower cost and supports a limited set of features, and Professional, which supports the full set of features. No long-term commitments or upfront payments are needed.

  • Reserved pricing: Purchase one or more reserved transcode slots for a fixed monthly charge (additional fees for Dolby Audio and Audio Normalization usage minutes), with a minimum 12-month commitment. Each slot runs a single job at a time, with access to a subset of on-demand encoding features, and can process jobs continuously one after the other. See the documentation for more information.

On-Demand Pricing

On-demand pricing is ideal for customers who are building applications with short-term or unpredictable workloads requiring fast turnaround times and scalability, and for new applications or workflows being developed with AWS Elemental MediaConvert.

With on-demand pricing, you are charged per minute of video in each output, with rates that depend on the features that you use. The duration of each output is calculated in one second increments and then converted into fractional minutes to determine the total charge for the output. For example, an output with a duration of 45 seconds would be 45/60, or 0.75 of a minute. The minimum duration for billing is 10 seconds, so an output with a duration of less than 10 seconds will be billed for 10 seconds.

AWS Elemental MediaConvert offers two pricing tiers with on-demand pricing that differ based on the encoding capabilities each support. The first is the lower cost Basic tier, which is intended for simple web distribution use cases with limited AVC, VP8, and VP9 outputs. The second is the Professional tier, which supports a full suite of professional video processing features designed for broadcast and multiscreen delivery of high-quality outputs. A detailed comparison of capabilities supported by the Basic and Professional tiers can be found here.

Basic Tier

The Basic tier in on-demand pricing supports outputs with the AVC codec and single-pass encoding or the VP8 and VP9 codecs with speed optimized multi-pass encoding, with capabilities like clipping, stitching, and static overlays, among others. MP3 audio output is also supported in this tier. Basic tier is the best option for processing user-generated content or other short-form content that is primarily meant for distribution over the web. The per-minute rate offered under the Basic tier varies based on the resolution and frame rate of the output.

Professional Tier

The Professional tier in on-demand pricing supports a full suite of premium OTT multiscreen delivery features for the AVC, HEVC (up to 8K), AV1, VP8, and VP9 codecs such as multi-pass and high-quality encoding; Accelerated Transcoding; video passthrough; a wide range of caption formats; digital rights management (DRM); ad signaling; advanced pre-processors; and multiple track audio processing. The Professional tier also includes the Apple ProRes, MPEG-2, AVC-Intra, XAVC, and VC-3 mezzanine video codecs, which are used for archiving, editing, or exchanging broadcast-quality content. The per-minute rate offered under the Professional tier varies based on the resolution, frame rate, quality setting, and codec of the output. The Professional tier also offers a number of optional add-on features including Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Audio, Audio Normalization, InSync FrameFormer frame rate conversion, Nagra watermarking, Nielsen watermarking, and Kantar watermarking integration, each available for an additional charge.

Resolutions for both the Basic and Professional tiers are defined as:
SD is an output of less than 720 resolution.
HD is an output of greater than or equal to 720 resolution, but less than or equal to 1080 resolution.
4K is an output of greater than 1080, but less than or equal to 2160 resolution.
8K is an output of greater than 2160, up to and including 4320 resolution.

For outputs with a landscape orientation, resolution is measured vertically.
For outputs with a portrait orientation, resolution is measured horizontally.

Reserved Pricing

Reserved pricing is for customers that have predictable and consistent ongoing usage. It is ideal for workflows where encoding jobs are queued up and processed over time. With reserved pricing, there isn't a Basic or Professional tier division, as each purchased reserved transcoding slot supports the full suite of capabilities. Optional add-on features including Dolby Audio and Audio Normalization are available for an additional fee, and are billed per minute of output. Dolby Vision encoding, Accelerated Transcoding, Automated ABR, AV1 encoding, InSync FrameFormer frame rate conversion, and 8K resolution processing are not available in reserved pricing. For more information, please see the reserved queues documentation.

To use reserved pricing, you pay for reserved transcode slots, which are billed at a fixed monthly rate with a minimum 12-month commitment. You can purchase multiple slots using the console and apply them to your reserved queues. A simple calculator is available in the console to provide an estimate of how many slots are required. You will need to first run a typical job in an on-demand queue using the simulate reserved queue feature, observe how long the job takes to complete, set a maximum desired turnaround time, and the calculator will estimate the number of reserved transcode slots required.

On-Demand Pricing Examples

  • Example 1
  • The cost for a 10 minute 30 second source file transcoded in US West (Oregon) using the AVC codec to an SD output at 30 fps and with single-pass quality setting but not using any capabilities like captions, DRM, multiple track audio etc. specified under the Professional tier would be $0.07875.

    Output:
AVC, SD, 30 fps, single-pass quality= $0.0075 per min (Basic tier)
    (10.5 x $0.0075 = $0.07875)
  • Example 2
  • The cost for a 10 minute 45 second source file transcoded in Asia Pacific (Singapore) using the HEVC codec to an HD output at 30 fps and single-pass quality setting would be $0.58.

    Output:
HEVC, HD, 30 fps, single-pass quality = $0.0544 per min (Professional tier)
    (10.75 x $0.0544 = $0.58)
  • Example 3
  • The cost for an 8 second source file transcoded in EU (Ireland) to one SD output with captions using the AVC codec, single-pass quality setting, and 30 fps and one HD output with captions using the AVC codec, single-pass quality setting, and 30 fps would be $0.01.
