On-Demand DB Instances let you pay for compute capacity by the hour your DB Instance runs with no long-term commitments. This frees you from the costs and complexities of planning, purchasing, and maintaining hardware and transforms what are commonly large fixed costs into much smaller variable costs.

For both standard and Multi-AZ deployments, pricing is per DB Instance-hour consumed, from the time a DB Instance is launched until it is terminated. Each partial DB Instance-hour consumed will be billed as a full hour.

Reserved Instance pricing offers significant savings over On-Demand pricing. Reserved Instances are appropriate for steady-state production workloads. Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL offers Heavy Utilization Reserved Instances, for which you commit to always run the instances through the entire duration of the Reserved Instance term. Using Reserved Instance pricing, you can save up to 45% with a 1-year term and up to 65% with a 3-year term over On-Demand pricing. Both Single-AZ and Multi-AZ deployments have separate reservation options.

Amazon RDS provides two storage types: Standard Storage and Provisioned IOPS Storage. They differ in performance characteristics and price, allowing you to tailor your storage performance and cost to the needs of your applications.

Amazon RDS Provisioned IOPS is a storage option designed to deliver fast, predictable, and consistent I/O performance. With Amazon RDS Provisioned IOPS, you specify an IOPS rate when creating a DB Instance, and Amazon RDS provisions that IOPS rate for the lifetime of the DB Instance. Amazon RDS Provisioned IOPS is optimized for I/O-intensive, transactional (OLTP) database workloads.

For each DB Instance class, Amazon RDS provides you the ability to specify or provision the I/O capacity your database needs. You can provision and scale from 1,000 IOPS to 30,000 IOPS and 100GB to 3TB of storage with the PostgreSQL DB Engine. Note that maximum realized IOPS will vary by database workload. With Provisioned IOPS, you will be charged for the throughput and storage you provision. However, you will not be charged for the I/Os you consume.

Backup storage is the storage associated with your automated database backups and any user-initiated DB Snapshots you have taken. Increasing your backup retention period or taking additional database snapshots increases the backup storage consumed by your database.

  • There is no additional charge for backup storage up to 100% of your provisioned database storage for an active DB Instance.* After the DB Instance is terminated, backup storage is billed at $0.095 per GB-month.
  • Additional backup storage: $0.095 per GB-month

* For example, if you have an active DB Instance with 10GB-month of provisioned database storage, we will provide up to 10GB-month of backup storage at no additional charge. Based upon our experience as database administrators, the vast majority of databases require less raw storage for a backup than for the primary data set, meaning that most customers will never pay for backup storage.

The pricing below is based on data transferred “in” and “out” of Amazon RDS.

  • Data transferred between Amazon RDS and Amazon EC2 Instances in the same Availability Zone is free.
  • Data transferred between Availability Zones for replication of Multi-AZ deployments is free.
  • Amazon RDS DB Instances outside VPC: For data transferred between an Amazon EC2 instance and Amazon RDS DB Instance in different Availability Zones of the same Region, there is no Data Transfer charge for traffic in or out of the Amazon RDS DB Instance. You are only charged for the Data Transfer in or out of the Amazon EC2 instance, and standard Amazon EC2 Regional Data Transfer charges apply ($.01 per GB in/out).
  • Data transferred between Availability Zones for replication of Multi-AZ deployments is free.
  • Amazon RDS DB Instances inside VPC: For data transferred between an Amazon EC2 instance and Amazon RDS DB Instance in different Availability Zones of the same Region, Amazon EC2 Regional Data Transfer charges apply on both sides of transfer.
  • DB Snapshot Copy is charged for the data transferred to copy the snapshot data across regions. Once the snapshot is copied, standard database snapshot charges will apply to store it in the destination region.

** As part of AWS’s Free Usage Tier, new AWS customers will receive free 15 GB of data transfer out each month aggregated across all AWS services for one year.

*** Rate tiers take into account your aggregate Data Transfer Out usage across Amazon EC2, Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier, Amazon RDS, Amazon SimpleDB, Amazon SQS, Amazon SNS, AWS Storage Gateway, Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon VPC.
