Amazon Products Feed

In 2002, Steven Barnes, aka MrRat, released an open source Perl script called Amazon Products Feed (APF), built upon the Amazon Associates Web Service. This feature-rich and versatile application is downloaded by web developers more than 8,000 times per year. APF makes it easy for those with little or no programming experience to build a personalized online store utilizing Amazon’s complete product catalog.

Tens of thousands of Amazon Associates around the world know MrRat by name and e-mail him with thanks and praise. APF and Amazon Associates Web Service make it possible for Amazon Associates to earn up to an 8.5% commission from Amazon products sold through their site. MrRat’s APF script remains free, despite its popularity and its commission-earning value.

“I didn’t start this project with the goal of creating a customer base; it just happened. I did something for the benefit of others and I’ve gained something in the process,” says Barnes.

In addition to being comprehensive and secure, APF returns results very quickly—a critical attribute for many web developers. The script serves web sites in five languages across the US, UK, Japan, France, Denmark, and Canada.
