Atomic Fiction, a San Francisco Bay Area special effects studio, had to design and implement visual effects for Star Trek: Into Darkness in less than four months. Using AWS, the studio was able to launch a render farm in minutes and spend more than 1.7 million hours on the project—including 900,000 hours of work in 30 days—allowing artists to create innovative alien landscapes without physical restraints. After the project was final, Atomic Fiction was able to scale down resources just as easily and archive content to Amazon Glacier.
