AWS Case Study: Avianca

Hi Fabio, briefly tell us about your business.

Avianca is a domestic airline that that flies to 22 cities and 24 airports in Brazil. We are known for comfort and competitive pricing. The Brazilian Ibero Customer Relationship Institute (IBRC) recognized us as the best Brazilian airline in 2010 and 2011. We recently purchased new Airbus A318, A319 and A320 aircraft that will enable us to offer more flight choices to the cities that we already serve and add new destinations.

Why did you decide to use AWS?

IT manages the resources for the marketing department. Marketing works with external agencies and we wanted to be able to manage all of their assets in a secure environment, separate from the corporate infrastructure. We chose Amazon Web Services (AWS) because it is a very cost-effective solution. We estimate that using AWS reduces our costs by 60% compared to an on-premises infrastructure.

How have you incorporated Amazon Web Services as part of your architecture? What services are you using and how?

Dedalus, a member of the AWS Partner Network, with a management and support team in Brazil, implemented the solution for us. We are using two Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances on Windows and Linux machines. We also use Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for backup.

How has AWS helped your business?

AWS met our needs simply and immediately by providing greater control over costs, the ability to handle variable demand, enhanced security, and simplified administration.

The AWS solution is dynamic and meets our needs. We are very pleased with the performance of the AWS solution. Using AWS, we can bring on servers quickly if we need them, and in the six months that we have run on AWS, we have delivered 100% on our service level agreement (SLA) to our business partners.

Do you have any future plans to incorporate other AWS solutions?

Within our strategic IT roadmap, we envision AWS as a key partner to help our growing business.
