Before migrating to Amazon Web Services (AWS), KPIT Cummins maintained traditional servers in data centers and computer labs for its training and R&D needs. As business expanded, the traditional infrastructure was no longer effective and the company decided to run its operations on the cloud computing platform of AWS. KPIT Cummins moved its Oracle Ebusiness R12.1.3 and 11g Oracle database to the AWS cloud – a two-node application with services running on both nodes. Elastic IPs are configured for both nodes and the company uses the template-based Oracle Applications Ebusiness suite to configure the latest version of Oracle ERP on virtual servers.

In choosing AWS as a cloud provider, KPIT Cummins considered several key factors:

  • Flexible structure. With the "pay as you go" pricing structure, KPIT Cummins pays only for storage and usage, enabling the company to eliminate the high costs incurred in maintaining physical servers.
  • No Additional Licensing Fees. Because Oracle does not require additional licensing fees to use previously licensed products on AWS, the company benefits from additional savings.
  • Immediate Deployment. When volume increases, additional servers can be deployed within minutes to handle the load, this eliminates the need of managing physical infrastructure by the company, and saves important man-hours required to manage physical infrastructure.

Speaking about the numerous benefits of the AWS cloud computing platform, Prakash Nihalani, Engagement manager explains what Prakash likes most about AWS: "In short, I would say that it's 'infrastructure at a click.' AWS has helped us eliminate the complexity of managing infrastructure and we no longer have to manage multiple vendors for our infrastructure needs."

The company is looking forward to exploring other solutions from Amazon in the future.
