NaNoWriMo, a Berkeley, Calif.-based nonprofit, provides hundreds of thousands of writers around the world with an online platform to collaborate on fiction-writing projects. Organizers used to self-host the NaNoWriMo site, where writers could post profiles, novel synopses, and excerpts, but moved to AWS to ensure availability and redirect the small nonprofit’s staff toward more strategic projects. By migrating its web servers to AWS, NaNoWriMo can provide reliable service and low latency to its users each year, scaling to 100x its normal traffic during peak periods.
