AWS Case Study: RunE2E & Kenneth Cole

RunE2E has developed strategic relationships with leading business software and cloud infrastructure partners, including SAP and Amazon Web Services (AWS). The company has maintained a focus on SAP's line of business applications and analytics deployed in the cloud computing environment of AWS. The superior products of its partners – combined with a team of experienced technical experts – make RunE2E a powerful entity.
RunE2E recently decided to cloud its entire SAP Infrastructure and Platform using a combination of private and public hosting scenarios. For all public hosting scenarios, RunE2E chose AWS to standardize all of its SAP demo, development, and test environments. This wide ranging initiative covered the installation of the SAP CRM, SAP CRM RDS and SAP BusinessObjects 4.0 toolset including Data Services, Web Intelligence, Explorer, Crystal Reports, and Xcelcius Dashboarding. RunE2E leveraged several AWS APIs for starting/stopping the system, increasing system capacity based on demand needs, and changing security profiles providing a low cost but scalable environment to run its business. In conjunction, SAP has recently certified SAP CRM RDS and SAP BusinessObjects 4.0 to run on the AWS Platform.
Why Amazon Web Services
When Kenneth Cole's Information Technology team, and client of RunE2E, decided to explore a new version of the SAP BusinessObjects suite - using a cloud computing scenario to complement its on-premise data center environment was a natural choice. Taking advantage of the recent cloud computing explosion and advances that AWS incorporated into its platform, Kenneth Cole's Information Technology team planned a short, time-based Proof of Concept to support their growing Analytic requirements. RunE2E states the initial system environment and platform provisioning, software installation, simple user administration, connections to the on-premise data stores, and development of multiple reporting templates was completed in less than three weeks and the accolades confirm that the AWS-RunE2E-Kenneth Cole venture was tremendously successful. According to Regina Gorinshteyn, Divisional Senior Vice President, Information Technology, "Had a traditional model been used, the environment would not have been available in three weeks."
The total AWS infrastructure and systems cost supporting the POC was less that $500 USD. The cost included building a number of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances, changing the Amazon EC2 instance size to measure system performance improvements, copying Amazon EC2 instances into Amazon Machine Image (AMI) templates, and re-deploying to the customer's private AWS application. Furthermore, Regina adds: "RunE2E and AWS provided Kenneth Cole Productions with an alternative to the traditional time, and resource-consuming method of deploying a development environment for an SAP software project. In our case, we did a Proof of Concept to validate the use of SAP BusinessObjects 4.0 with AWS as the platform."
Although SAP has traditionally required enormous amounts of resources to build, deploy, and run, Amazon Web Services has changed the game as it relates to provisioning and running IT platforms for SAP technologies. With Amazon, SAP technologies can be installed quickly and efficiently. Ray Kelly, Chief Technology Officer of RunE2E elaborates: "The convergence of IT Infrastructure Services – primarily the provisioning of enterprise systems on IT platforms – and software implementation activities are now tightly wound - as never before - due to the Amazon Cloud platform. The traditional model of building an environment over an extended period of time and starting the application implementation project weeks and sometimes months later has gone out the window. Deploying enterprise-level software in the morning and starting the application implementation project in the afternoon is here and now."
