AWS Case Study: sambaash
sambaash, based out of Singapore, is led by a team of experienced business and technology professionals who have successfully provided business solutions across Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific and Australia for more than 25 years.
sambaash’s mission is to create and foster an online environment for business communities to collaborate and benefit from their collective knowledge and experiences. sambaash’s vision to enable meaningful conversations within communities is achieved through its solution for online communities: the sambaash 2.0 platform.
Since incorporation, sambaash has been engaged as a social enterprise media and Web 2.0 technology partner to conceptualize, strategize, design, implement, deploy, host, and manage emerging cloud-based online communities.
When company founders decided to open sambaash, they knew they would need a cloud services provider that would provide the flexibility and on-the-fly capacity to enable the multi-tenancy platforms they envisioned.
Why Amazon Web Services
sambaash uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) for development, build management, source-code management, testing, deployment, and production sites, utilizing Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Elastic Block Storage (Amazon EBS) and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). The sambaash platform adheres to Web 2.0 fundamentals and is deployed as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) subscription through cloud computing. In this layered architecture with all services and data hosted centrally, the business model is decomposed into a stack of services working on the data model, including features to allow for scalability and flexibility.
Geared to support multi-tenancy deployments in stages, the sambaash 2.0 platform enables crowdsourcing for development, while sambaash support of cloud computing allows client enterprises to “white label” subscribed business applications and services for their communities. The AWS platform allows sambaash to decide on its technology stack. At the same time, the AWS cloud infrastructure available in Singapore addresses concerns about keeping data local.
sambaash currently enables its enterprise solution for the following communities:
- Creative & Design
One of the early adopters of the sambaash 2.0 platform is the Creative Industry Professional Community. As a Strategic Partner of 6 Degrees Pte Ltd, Sambaash has been selected by the Ministry of Information Communication and the Arts (MICA) to develop an on-line business community platform for the creative industries, based on Web 2.0, SaaS and cloud computing principles.
The primary expertise of sambaash lies in:
- Online Community Technology Platform, on the Cloud
- Social Media Consulting
- Helping Industry / Business Create and Foster Communities
- Banking Consulting
From its inception, the sambaash 2.0 platform has been based on cloud computing ideology, and sambaash appreciates most how AWS offers capacity-on-demand to startups, with instantiation and use of required capacity on the fly, as well as multiple available sizes of systems. Giridhar Nayak, Founder Director, Technology, at sambaash cites cost savings, operational cash flow efficiency, and “lots of developer time/man days” saved through AWS.
As the number of communities grows, sambaash plans to activate multi-tenancy platforms, requiring other AWS services such as Elastic Load Balancing (ELB). Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) and Amazon Import/Export. The team plans to use Amazon CloudFront and Amazon Machine Image to create ready, on-available instances. “And of course,” adds Giridhar Nayak, “AWS Premium Support with growth in our business.” In addition, sambaash is considering Amazon Elastic MapReduce (Amazon EMR). Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS), and Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS) for product architecture in the short term.
The sambaash team has learned many valuable lessons during development, deployment, and productization which they are eager to share. “AWS has enabled us to target our initial APAC communities with the knowledge that the data resides in the AWS Asia Pacific (Singapore) Region. It has enabled us to get started with minimal outlay and be ready to scale with our future success,” says Giridhar Nayak.
