Sun Microsystems and Amazon Web Services are collaborating to offer OpenSolaris on Amazon EC2.
OpenSolaris is a free, open source project based on the Sun Solaris Operating System technology. With OpenSolaris on Amazon EC2, you have access to a robust open source OS on a scalable, reliable, cost-effective virtual computing environment. Amazon EC2’s simple Web service interface enables you to adjust your capacity in minutes and only pay for the capacity you use.
Sun is offering a variety of Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) in the beta program:
- OpenSolaris 2009.06 – Sun’s latest supported offering of OpenSolaris
- OpenSolaris 2008.11 – Sun’s current supported offering of OpenSolaris
- OpenSolaris 2008.05 – Sun’s first supported offering of OpenSolaris
- Solaris Express Community Edition – Sun’s binary release for OpenSolaris developers based on the latest OpenSolaris source base
These AMIs are available under the terms of Sun’s license agreement.
