Q: What is the AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer?
The AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer will provide free use of t1.micro instances running Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, capped at 750 instance hours per month. This benefit is only available to existing AWS customers who have signed-up for Free Tier after October 20, 2010 and new AWS customers, and is available for 12 months following your AWS sign-up date. The offer will mirror the current AWS Free Usage Tier benefits for the Linux t1.micro.
Q: Does an AWS customer have access to 750 instance hours each of the Linux and Windows Server 2008 R2 t1.micro instances under the AWS Free Usage Tier?
Yes. A customer with access to the AWS Free Usage Tier can use up to 750 instance hours each of t1.micro instances running Linux and Windows Server 2008 R2. Usage of the Linux and Windows Server 2008 R2 t1.micros is counted independently.
Q: For what time period will the AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer be available to an AWS customer?
Your AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows will be available for the full duration of your AWS Free Usage Tier offer. Please see http://aws.amazon.com/free/ for more information.
Q: Will the AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer be extended beyond when a customer’s access to the AWS Free Usage Tier ends?
The AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer is a part of the AWS Free Usage Tier. There will not be a separate extension of this benefit.
Q: Will the AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer apply to instances running Microsoft SQL Server Standard?
The AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer will not apply to instances launched with Microsoft SQL Server Standard software.
Q: Will the AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer be available in all AWS regions?
The AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer will be available in all AWS regions, except for GovCloud.
Q: How is an AWS customer billed when instance hour usage exceeds benefit available under the AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer?
The customer is billed at the standard EC2 price for usage exceeding 750 instance hours of Windows t1.micro. Please see the following for EC2 pricing information: http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/.
Q: Can an AWS customer run more than one instance under the AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer?
An AWS customer can run more than one t1.micro instance simultaneously and be eligible for usage counted under the AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer. However any use exceeding 750 instance hours, across all Windows t1.micro instances, across all eligible regions, will be billed at standard EC2 prices. For example, if two t1micro instances with Windows Server 2008 R2 are run for 400 hours each in a single month, the customer will accumulate 800 instance hours of usage, of which 750 hours will be free, and the remaining 50 hours will be billed at the standard EC2 price.
Q: Which versions of Windows Server OS are available for use with the AWS Free Usage Tier with Windows offer?
We recommend Windows Server 2008 R2 for the best customer experience on an Amazon EC2 t1.micro instance. However, for AWS customers with legacy application requirements, the Windows Free Tier offer includes support for other versions of Windows Server OS, including Windows Server 2003 R2.
