10AM-11AM Securing AWS Services Built on Top of AWS Services This talk provides Insight into how AWS securely manages internal consumption of AWS services. Many AWS services are built on top of AWS.  Great examples are RDS and ELB, which are built using EC2 instances.  Less visibly, we make extensive use of DynamoDB and SQS in our management and control plane.  Using AWS helps us move faster, but we have to do so securely.  Come learn what AWS Security does (and doesn't do) to keep a handle on internal consumption of AWS services. 1:30PM-2:30PM Security related Event Detection and Response in The Cloud This talk provides an overview of key areas to monitor for interesting security-related events and what to generally do about them should they occur, including some specific solutions you can start using yourself. If your business runs entirely on AWS, your AWS account is one of your most critical assets. Just as you might run an intrusion detection system in your on-premise environment, you should monitor activity in your AWS account to detect abnormal behavior. Naturally, you also need to know what to do when you are alerted to such behavior. This session walks you through some hypothetical security-related events in your AWS environment and the suggested appropriate response for each. Learn about what to keep an eye out for, and how to leverage unique capabilities of the AWS environment for quick recovery operations and even data acquisition to support forensics, in ways similar to how you respond to events in your on-premise environment. 10AM-6PMll be provided access to Chef Bootcamp: A Taste of Chef on AWS Chef is a configuration management and automation framework that can help AWS customers safeguard their infrastructure, manage complexity, and accelerate time to market.  This is a hands-on introduction to Chef with a specific focus on AWS integration.  Participants will write recipes that describe system configuration policies, use Chef Provisioning to create new EC2 instances and automatically apply recipes, and use Chef Provisioning to create a sample full-stack application topology that includes additional AWS services.

This introduction uses exercises written for CentOS as examples, though these concepts may be similarly applied to any Operating System supported in EC2 (including Windows).  All development will be done from a pre-configured remote workstation instance (Linux) provided by Chef.  As such, all students must have an SSH client on the local laptop they bring to class: no other modifications are necessary to student laptops. Participants in this course wi an AWS account to work in, should have basic command line experience, know how to use a command-line text editor (e.g. vim, emacs, nano, etc), and have a general understanding of web application architecture or familiarity managing AWS infrastructure.  This course is intended to answer common beginner questions about managing AWS infrastructure within the Chef framework and guide students through basic deployment scenarios.
