3PM-3:30PM Transforming Cancer Treatment: Using AWS to Deliver on the Promise of Precision Medicine Speakers: Jon Hirsch, Founder and President, Syapse and Kristen McCaleb, Program Manager, UCSF Genomic Initiative
In the past ten years, the cost of sequencing a human genome has fallen from $3 billion dollars to $1,000, unlocking the ability for clinicians to use genomics in routine care. As the volume of genomic data used in the clinic begins to grow, healthcare providers are facing a number of new IT challenges, such as how to integrate this data with clinical data stored in electronic medical records, and how to make both available in real time to inform clinical decisions. In this session, find out how UCSF Medical Center and Syapse met these challenges head-on and solved them using AWS, all while remaining compliant with privacy and security requirements. Learn how Syapse's precision medicine platform uses Amazon VPC, Dedicated Instances, Amazon EC2, and Amazon EBS to build a high performance, scalable, and HIPAA-compliant data platform that enables UCSF to deliver on the promise of precision medicine by dramatically reducing time and increasing the accuracy and utility of genomic profiling in cancer treatment. Marrying Research and Real Life to Create Health Information that’s Human…and Relevant to Consumers Speakers: Thomas Goetz and Matt Mohebbi, Co-Founders, Iodine
In medicine, there’s no lack of data about how therapies work in a highly controlled, clinical environment.  But there’s comparatively meager data about the messy, real life environment where many therapies are administered and taken.  Iodine is working to measure this “mess,” both through objective and subjective collection of individual healthcare experiences. The challenge comes in structuring and filtering this data, as well as with harmonizing it with existing clinical data. The reward comes in surfacing this data in ways that allow people to parse a dataset of collective experience to empower consumers to take control of their own health. Learn how Iodine is leveraging AWS to analyze a unique dataset for a computer vision project, and how they’re creating the new wave of targeted, actionable tools that will drive better healthcare decisions, adherence, and outcomes for consumers. 4:30PM-5PM Getting into Your Genes: The Definitive Guide to Using Amazon EMR, Amazon ElastiCache, and Amazon S3 to Deliver High-Performance Scientific Applications  Speakers: Puneet Siri, Sr Director, Software Engineering, and Shakila Pothini, Associate Director, Cloud Applications, Thermo Fisher Scientific
The key to fighting cancer through better therapeutics is a deep understanding of the basic biology of this disease at a cellular and molecular level. Comprehensive analysis of cancer mutations in specific tumors or cancer cell lines using Life Technologies Sequencing and real-time PCR systems generates gigabytes to terabytes of data every-day that our customers bring together in studies looking to discover the genetic fingerprint of cancer. This data typically translates to millions of records in the database that need complex algorithmic processing, cross application analysis and interactive visualizations with real time (2-3 seconds) response to enable the user to consume such large volumes of complex scientific information. We have chosen the AWS platform to bring this new era of data analysis power to our customers using technologies such as S3, ElastiCache and DynamoDB for storage and EMR services for parallelizing complex computations. This talk will discuss challenges & roadblocks in building data intense, highly interactive applications in the cloud. It will also highlight enhanced customer workflows and highly optimized applications with orders of magnitude improvement in performance and scalability. Register here »

2PM-3PM Migrating Thousands of Workloads to AWS at Enterprise Scale Many large enterprises have begun using AWS to host development and test environments while also building greenfield applications in AWS. After realizing the benefits that AWS has to offer, many Enterprise look for ways to accelerate their migration to the cloud. In beginning this journey they are often faced with a number of challenges such as determining which applications should move, how they should move, and how can they be effectively managed in the cloud.  AWS Solution Architects and AWS Professional Services have developed a migration methodology, based on our experiences, to quickly, efficiently, and successfully move enterprise applications to AWS at scale.  This session will be pragmatic; covering the challenges, lessons learned, best practices, and end architecture for several large scale migrations done by AWS Global System Integrator partners. This session will also review the approach, tools, and methods that can help Enterprises evolve their cloud transformation programs.

Special Event with Chef "The Lean Enterprise: Book Signing and Q&A with Jez Humble" Companies like Amazon, Google and Netflix have shown that software can provide a powerful competitive advantage to organizations experimenting with disruptive business models. However in more traditional organizations, where IT is “just a department”, it’s easy to be cynical about the transformative power of software development. The main barriers are cultural and architectural – and of course, these concerns are linked.

This is the premise of The Lean Enterprise, the new book co-authored by industry luminary Jez Humble. During this special evening event, Jez will conduct a Q&A session on the principles that enable rapid software-driven innovation at scale by harnessing your organization’s true competitive advantage – the ingenuity of its employees.

Book signings will follow the Q&A, and food and beverages will be served. Register here »

6PM-7:30PM Behind the Scenes with PagerDuty: "Minimum Viable Ops" Building a new system involves a lot of infrastructure and monitoring decisions: where to host, how to deploy, and how to monitor your new application. There's a strong tendency to "do it right" from the get-go. But trying to build the ultimate platform will slow down your progress in those crucial first days.

In this talk, we will discuss how to best approach these decisions. We will explain the layers of infrastructure you need to successfully run a system in production: logging, deployments, and monitoring.. We’ll cover how you can build these layers without over-engineering, and how needs change as your business grows. You’ll leave with a plan for how to build the first version of your operations platform and ideas for how that might change as your service grows.  Speaker: Doug Barth, Operations Engineer Register here »

6PM-8PM Apache Solr at Scale Deploying and Maintaining Solr at Scale: Over the recent releases, Apache Solr has come a long way in terms of ease of use and the getting started experience. The startup scripts and various configuration APIs now allow users to ignore the implementation details when they are starting off. However, it doesn’t stay as easy when deploying Solr in a production environment, especially in a distributed setup, which is a common use-case. This talk will explore the evolution of Solr to being an easy-to-use yet extremely feature-rich, scalable search engine. In addition to that, by the means of a demo, we will cover deploying and maintaining Solr in AWS using the Solr Scale ToolKit.

Speaker: Anshum Gupta, Lucidworks

Three Things We Learned from Running a Large-Scale Solr Installation: We’ll talk about Amazon CloudSearch, how they run Solr, the type of large-scale Solr usage they see from customers, and technical lessons they've learned along the way.
