6PM-7:30PM Behind the Scenes with PagerDuty: "Minimum Viable Ops" Building a new system involves a lot of infrastructure and monitoring decisions: where to host, how to deploy, and how to monitor your new application. There's a strong tendency to "do it right" from the get-go. But trying to build the ultimate platform will slow down your progress in those crucial first days.

In this talk, we will discuss how to best approach these decisions. We will explain the layers of infrastructure you need to successfully run a system in production: logging, deployments, and monitoring.. We’ll cover how you can build these layers without over-engineering, and how needs change as your business grows. You’ll leave with a plan for how to build the first version of your operations platform and ideas for how that might change as your service grows.  Speaker: Doug Barth, Operations Engineer Register here »

6PM-8PM Apache Solr at Scale Deploying and Maintaining Solr at Scale: Over the recent releases, Apache Solr has come a long way in terms of ease of use and the getting started experience. The startup scripts and various configuration APIs now allow users to ignore the implementation details when they are starting off. However, it doesn’t stay as easy when deploying Solr in a production environment, especially in a distributed setup, which is a common use-case. This talk will explore the evolution of Solr to being an easy-to-use yet extremely feature-rich, scalable search engine. In addition to that, by the means of a demo, we will cover deploying and maintaining Solr in AWS using the Solr Scale ToolKit.

Speaker: Anshum Gupta, Lucidworks

Three Things We Learned from Running a Large-Scale Solr Installation: We’ll talk about Amazon CloudSearch, how they run Solr, the type of large-scale Solr usage they see from customers, and technical lessons they've learned along the way.

10AM-6PM Chef Bootcamp: A Taste of Chef on AWS Chef is a configuration management and automation framework that can help AWS customers safeguard their infrastructure, manage complexity, and accelerate time to market.  This is a hands-on introduction to Chef with a specific focus on AWS integration.  Participants will write recipes that describe system configuration policies, use Chef Provisioning to create new EC2 instances and automatically apply recipes, and use Chef Provisioning to create a sample full-stack application topology that includes additional AWS services.

This introduction uses exercises written for CentOS as examples, though these concepts may be similarly applied to any Operating System supported in EC2 (including Windows).  All development will be done from a pre-configured remote workstation instance (Linux) provided by Chef.  As such, all students must have an SSH client on the local laptop they bring to class: no other modifications are necessary to student laptops. Participants in this course will be provided access to an AWS account to work in, should have basic command line experience, know how to use a command-line text editor (e.g. vim, emacs, nano, etc), and have a general understanding of web application architecture or familiarity managing AWS infrastructure.  This course is intended to answer common beginner questions about managing AWS infrastructure within the Chef framework and guide students through basic deployment scenarios.
