Microsoft has developed a set of Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) for some of the more popular Microsoft solutions. These AMIs are well documented, optimized, and configured based on best practices. These AMIs are available in all regions that AWS supports to provide a consistent global experience. Built on top of Microsoft’s latest server technology, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, these AMIs are divided into two categories based on their usage:
Web Platform- Development and Hosting
The WebMatrix Development Server AMI, published by Microsoft, provides a ready to develop, pre-configured server for web developers or ISVs leveraging the Microsoft WebMatrix Platform. It can be used to build websites and publish them to a web hosting provider that supports Web Deploy or FTP, or to an Amazon EC2 instance running the WebMatrix Hosting Server AMI.
The WebMatrix Hosting Server AMI, published by Microsoft, is a ready to deploy a host server for your websites and web applications. It supports simple one-click publishing from any Microsoft WebMatrix client.
Databases for Development and Production
This AMI, published by Microsoft extends Windows-Server2008R2-SqlStandard-v3 AMI published by Amazon. It contains scripts to install and optimize SQL Server 2008R2 and accompanying services including SQL Server Analysis services, SQL Server Reporting services, and SQL Server Integration services to your environment based on Microsoft best practices.
