Amazon S3 Replication adds support for multiple destinations in the same, or different AWS Regions

Posted on: Dec 1, 2020

Amazon S3 Replication now gives you the ability to replicate data from one source bucket to multiple destination buckets in the same, or different AWS Regions. S3 Replication (multi-destination) is intended for customers that want to create and maintain multiple copies of their data in one or more AWS Regions. Additionally, when replicating to multiple destinations, you can use Amazon CloudWatch metrics to track replication progress for each region pair.

S3 Replication is an elastic, fully managed, low cost feature that replicates objects in the same AWS Region by using S3 Same-Region Replication (S3 SRR) or across different AWS Regions by using S3 Cross-Region Replication (S3 CRR). With S3 Replication (multi-destination), you can easily create a shared dataset by replicating data to multiple buckets in the same or different AWS Regions. For example, you can use S3 Replication to push software installation files to multiple AWS Regions to reduce latency and minimize the time to deploy for users in each region. S3 Replication (multi-destination) is an extension to S3 Replication, and will support all existing S3 Replication features like S3 Replication Time Control (S3 RTC), Replication metrics and notifications, and delete marker replication.

You can use the S3 Management Console, SDK, API, or AWS CloudFormation to create S3 Replication (multi-destination) rules from one source bucket to multiple destination buckets. S3 Replication (multi-destination) is available today in all AWS Regions, including the AWS GovCloud (US) Regions, the AWS China (Beijing) Region, operated by Sinnet, and the AWS China (Ningxia) Region, operated by NWCD.
