Introducing Amazon EC2 M5 Instances
M5 Instances are the next generation of the Amazon EC2 General Purpose compute instances, powered by 2.5 GHz Intel® Xeon Platinum 8175 processors (formerly codenamed Skylake), and featuring Intel’s newest vector processing instruction set, Advanced Vector Extension 512 (AVX-512). M5 instances are based on the Nitro System, a combination of dedicated hardware and lightweight hypervisor, which delivers practically all of the compute and memory resources of the host hardware to your instances. They deliver up to 14% improvement in price/performance compared to M4 instances with the updated processor. The addition of new AVX-512 delivers 2x the performance per core for vector and floating point intensive workloads such as image and video processing, data compression, cryptography, and high-performance web serving.
To keep up with customers’ increasingly demanding workloads, M5 Instances introduce a new large instance size, m5.24xlarge, providing 96 vCPUs, 384 GiB of memory, and access all 48 physical cores. M5 Instances deliver up to 25 Gbps of aggregate network bandwidth, with next-generation EC2 networking technology, Enhanced Networking based on Elastic Network Adapter (ENA). For efficient, scalable EBS performance, EC2 M5 Instances provide up to 10 Gbps of dedicated bandwidth to EBS through the Non-Volatile Memory Express® (NVMe) storage interface. M5 Instances offer up to 265 MB/s throughput and 16K IOPS even on smaller instance sizes helping to improve storage performance. In addition, M5 EC2 instances offer four new Amazon CloudWatch metrics that allow you to monitor your traffic and usage to your attached EBS volumes. This will allow you to determine your EBS performance requirements to choose the optimal instance size for your application.
Designed to provide a balance of compute, memory, storage and network resources, M5 instances are ideal for workloads such as web and application servers, backend servers for enterprise applications (e.g. Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, SAP Business Suite, MySQL, Microsoft SQL, PostgreSQL databases), gaming servers, caching fleets, as well as for application development environments.
Amazon EC2 M5 instances are generally available today in the AWS US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), and EU (Ireland) regions.
