Lyell Immunopharma

Lyell Immunopharma develops transformational cancer therapies at the intersection of biology and technology.

In this video, Liz Homans, chief executive officer (CEO) of Lyell, discusses the company’s next-frontier work in cell therapy, powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Lyell’s cell therapy reprograms the body’s own cancer-fighting T-cells to more effectively eliminate cancerous tissue. Similar techniques have already proven effective at fighting soft-tissue cancers, but the vast majority of cancers (90 percent) consist of solid tumors, such as breast, skin, colon, and lung cancers. Lyell’s therapy, already in clinical trials, is targeted at these types of solid-tumor cancers. To produce these therapies more efficiently, with the potential to scale, the company built on AWS to create the LyFE Manufacturing Center (LyFE). LyFE is an all-digital, paperless cell therapy manufacturing facility built using AWS solutions, such as AWS IoT Greengrass, AWS Lambda (Lambda), AWS Glue, Amazon Athena, and Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), for healthcare and life sciences.

Given the complexity of the process, and just the massive amounts of data that cell therapy generates, we knew that AWS was the only obvious choice for a strategic cloud provider."
