SmugMug is the ultimate in photo sharing.  We allow our customers to upload unlimited photos to share with friends and family in big beautiful style.  We have no ads on our site and we never ask our visitors to register to see photos.

As customers upload their most precious photos, they will be excited to know that we are maintaining 3 copies of their high-resolution photos in multiple data centers around the US.

Reliable, Easy to use, Great offering
First, I find that is a shame that other reviewers cant see the forest through the trees. SmugMug uses S3 storage, they cost less than Phanfare, and if you don't want to pay the money for the service, don't, but don't rate a product by your judgements, rate it by how it performs and what benefit it is providing. To that point...SmugMug is an extremely easy to use Web based tool where I can put all of my digital photos (multiple gigs) and not have to worry about ever losing a picture. Locking photos down for privacy is always a checkbox away. Sharing photos is extremely easy. It stores an address book so sending emails alerts of new photos to grandparents is a 10 second task. Organization is a snap as well (categories are well put together.) What I paid my hard earned cash for is... peace of mind for my photos (backup)... an application that is reliable and will be updated continually... no ads to bother myself or others with... easy way to share photos with family and friends... easy way to view photos and organize from any PC with an internet connection... I can buy prints anytime I want with the click of a button... my wife can logon and manage pictures just as easily (she wanted nothing to do with jungle disk or bucket explorer - S3 tools)... The price is well worth it from my perspective and opinion.

Not an S3 Solution
SmugMug is a customer of S3, just like most of us here. You can't use SmugMug with your own S3 account. They use S3 for secondary storage and it's great for them. You still pay SmugMug their subscription fees which have no relationship to S3 pricing. It's great PR for Amazon, but SmugMug does not belong in the solutions catalog.

SmugMug's use of S3
See here ( for info about how SmugMug uses S3. (I, too, was annoyed with the flippant mention of SmugMug without any detail, so I went hunting.)

Smugmug - Great service for serious photographers
Smugmug is firmly targeted at serious amateur photographers and meets the needs of this segment well. Definitely worth the annual fee.
