How do I change the default payment method that's associated with my AWS account?

I want to use a different default payment method to pay my AWS charges. Or, I want to change my payment method from invoice, EFT, wire transfer, or another payment method to a different payment method.

Resolution

When you create an AWS account, your default payment method is the first payment method that you enter.

Add or change a payment method

You must use an accepted payment method for your seller of record.

For instructions, see How do I add a new payment method to my AWS account?

Remove or delete a payment method

Important: You can remove a default payment method only after you add a new payment method or choose another default payment method.

Complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Billing and Cost Management console.
  2. In the navigation pane, chose Payment preferences.
  3. Review your Payment methods to verify that your account has another valid payment method set as the default. To set a payment method as default, choose Make default next to your preferred payment method.
  4. Select the payment method to remove, and then choose Delete.
  5. For Delete payment method, choose Delete.

After you update your default payment method, new AWS bills automatically charge to that payment method for future billing. If you change your default payment method at the end of an AWS billing cycle, then you might incur charges on the original payment method.

Add a payment method when you remove a member account from your organization

When you remove a member account from AWS Organizations, the member account must have a valid payment method. If a valid payment method or other required information is missing when you remove the account, then you're sent to the sign-up process. You must provide a valid payment method and all other required information to remove the member account.

Troubleshoot unverified and declined credit cards

To make a credit card payment, you must have a valid, unexpired credit card that's verified.

To troubleshoot, see Why was my credit card declined when I tried to pay my AWS bill?

If you can't verify the credit card information, then open Payment preferences and delete the payment method. Then, add a new payment method and complete the card verification.
