Amazon EC2 R6i Instances

Memory optimized instances powered by 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors

Amazon EC2 R6i instances are powered by 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and deliver up to 15% better price performance compared to R5 instances. R6i instances feature an 8:1 ratio of memory to vCPU, just like R5 instances and support up to 128 vCPUs per instance, which is 33% more than R5 instances. These instances are SAP-Certified and are an ideal fit for memory-intensive workloads such as SQL and NoSQL databases, distributed web scale in-memory caches like Memcached and Redis, in-memory databases like SAP HANA, and real time big data analytics like Hadoop and Spark clusters.

AWS and Intel have a long-standing relationship dedicated to developing, building and supporting cloud services that are designed to meet current and future computing requirementsfor our customers. Please visit the AWS/Intel partner page for more information.

Benefits

Lower TCO

R6i instances deliver up to 15% better price performance than R5 instances. R6i instances also offer a new larger size with up to 128 vCPUs and 1,024 GiB of memory, enabling you to consolidate workloads on fewer instances and save on per core licensing costs.

Flexibility and choice

R6i instances add to the broadest and deepest selection of EC2 instances in the cloud and provide customers 10 different instance sizes that feature varying amounts of vCPU, memory, networking, and storage. This enables customers to run a broad range of memory-intensive workloads.

Maximized resource efficiency

R6i instances are built on the AWS Nitro System, a combination of dedicated hardware and lightweight hypervisor which delivers practically all of the compute and memory resources of the host hardware to your instances for better overall performance and security.

Features

Powered by 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors

R6i instances are powered by 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors (code named Ice Lake) with an all-core turbo frequency of 3.5 GHz, and include support for always-on memory encryption using Intel Total Memory Encryption (TME). R6i instances also support new Intel Advanced Vector Extension (AVX 512) instructions for faster execution of cryptographic algorithms.

High Performance

R6i instances support 40 Gbps bandwidth to Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) in the largest size and up to 10 Gbps in the four smallest sizes, which is more than double that of R5 instances. R6i instances also support up to 50 Gbps networking, which is twice that of R5 instances. R6i instances provide up to 20% higher memory bandwidth per vCPU compared to R5 instances. Customers can also enable Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) on the 32xlarge and metal sizes of R6i.

Built on AWS Nitro System

The AWS Nitro System is a rich collection of building blocks that offloads many of the traditional virtualization functions to dedicated hardware and software to deliver high performance, high availability, and high security while also reducing virtualization overhead.
