Sessions dive deeper into the selected topic. Presenters assume that the audience has some familiarity with the topic, but may or may not have direct experience implementing a similar solution.

Expert
Sessions are for attendees who are deeply familiar with the topic, have implemented a solution on their own already, and are comfortable with how the technology works across multiple services, architectures, and implementations.

Swami Sivasubramanian
Vice President, Amazon Machine Learning, Amazon Web Services

Swami Sivasubramanian is Vice President at AWS in charge of all Amazon AI and machine learning services. His team’s mission is “to put machine learning capabilities in the hands of every developer and data scientist.” Swami and the AWS AI and ML organization work on all aspects of machine learning, from ML frameworks (TensorFlow, Apache MXNet, and PyTorch) and infrastructure, to Amazon SageMaker (an end-to-end service for building, training, and deploying ML models in the cloud and at the edge), and finally AI services (Amazon Transcribe, Amazon Translate, Amazon Personalize, Amazon Forecast, Amazon Rekognition, Amazon Textract, Amazon Lex, Amazon Comprehend, Amazon Kendra, etc.) that make it easier for app developers to incorporate ML into their apps with no ML experience required.

Previously, Swami managed AWS’s NoSQL and big data services. He managed the engineering, product management, and operations for AWS database services that are the foundational building blocks for AWS: Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon ElastiCache (in-memory engines), Amazon QuickSight, and a few other big data services in the works. Swami has been awarded more than 250 patents, authored 40 referred scientific papers and journals, and participates in several academic circles and conferences.

Tim Tomlinson, Chief Product Officer, Blackboard

Tim serves as Blackboard’s Chief Product Officer. In this role, he is responsible for the design, development, and delivery of the company’s innovative and comprehensive product portfolio, and for providing a world-class support experience to Blackboard clients. Tim has more than twenty years of experience engineering technology solutions and leading software development projects and teams. Previously, he was Blackboard’s Vice President of Product Development, where his responsibilities spanned leadership of open source services from Blackboard Open LMS, Blackboard’s Analytics product portfolio, solutions for K-12 Community Engagement, and most recently, Blackboard Learn. In that role, he established a new Cloud Services Product Development team in 2012 and spearheaded the company’s first steps on the path to embracing SaaS and public Cloud technologies. Prior to joining Blackboard in 2009, Tim served as Director of Software Development for ANGEL Learning. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Technical Advisory Board for the IMS Global Learning Consortium. Tim holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and has earned a Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification from the Project Management Institute. As a first-generation college graduate and a father of three, Tim has both a professional and a personal devotion to the furtherance of education as a pathway to expanded opportunity and personal development.

Wendy Shepperd, Global Vice President, Engineering at New Relic

Wendy Shepperd, GVP Engineering, leads product development for the New Relic Telemetry Data Platform, the leading SaaS multi-tenant observability platform used by tens of thousands of engineers to build and operate more perfect software for their customers. She also oversees global infrastructure, architecture, managed services, and engineering operations for New Relic.

Having worked with a variety of organizations from start-ups to billion-dollar companies, Wendy brings a unique perspective on what works well for different types of situations and at different stages of growth. She loves growing leaders and building winning teams that execute with precision. Currently leading her fourth multi-million dollar cloud migration, Wendy has developed deep expertise and a fair amount of scar tissue around the many aspects of complex platform migrations in large scale environments. She enjoys collaborating with others to share the highs and lows that engineering leaders face on a daily basis.

Max Peterson, Vice President, Worldwide Public Sector, AWS

Max Peterson is the vice president for the AWS worldwide public sector. With over thirty years of public sector experience, Peterson is passionate about the power of cloud computing to drive digital transformation and achieve mission outcomes across government, education, and nonprofit sectors. Today, over 7,500 government agencies, over 14,000 academic institutions, and over 35,000 nonprofit organizations in more than 190 countries and territories use AWS.

Dr. Mónica Ospina Londoño, Director, Colombian Institute for Educational Assessment and Evaluation (ICFES)

Mónica Ospina is the director of ICFES. She was a member of the ICFES Research Advisory Committee prior to taking on this role. Her research and academic work focus on the impact of educational policies on evaluation, social development, educational innovation, and environmental economics. Previously, Ospina worked as a professor and researcher in the economics department of EAFIT University in Colombia. She also previously worked as a consultant in education assessment and evaluation for the Colombian Ministry of Education, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the International Development Research Centre, the Medellin Mayor’s Office, and other nonprofit organizations.

Venkat Jegadeesan, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC)

Venkat Jegadeesan is the CTO for BIDMC, a part of the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) system. He is responsible for providing vision and leadership to develop and implement innovative technologies that improve hospital operations and provider and patient experiences. Prior to joining BIDMC, Jegadeesan led the technology office for Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS). While at EOHHS, Jegadeesan led several major efforts including the development of the State’s Health Information Exchange (Mass HIWay) and cloud initiatives for Virtual Gateway, a single access point for a variety of Health and Human Services programs.

Simon Bates, Associate Provost, Teaching and Learning, University of British Columbia (UBC)

Simon Bates is the associate provost of Teaching and Learning at UBC. He is responsible for providing teaching, learning, and technology support to faculty and departments across undergraduate, graduate and lifelong learning at UBC. Bates contributes to UBC’s digital innovation ecosystem through the UBC AWS Cloud Innovation Centre (CIC). He is also a tenured professor of teaching in the physics and astronomy department and has been since 2012. Bates previously served as academic director of UBC’s Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology, a central academic support unit of nearly 100 staff where he oversaw the provision of academic support services to the teaching and learning community.
