Amazon FSx for Windows File Server
Fully managed native Windows file system
Built on Windows Server
Amazon FSx for Windows File Server provides a fully managed native Microsoft Windows file system so you can easily move your Windows-based applications that require shared file storage to AWS. Built on Windows Server, Amazon FSx provides the compatibility and features that your Microsoft applications rely on, including full support for the SMB protocol, Windows NTFS, and Microsoft Active Directory (AD) integration. Amazon FSx uses SSD storage to provide fast performance with low latency. This compatibility, performance, and scalability enables business-critical workloads such as home directories, media workflows, and business applications.
Amazon FSx helps you optimize TCO with Data Deduplication, reducing costs by 50-60% for general-purpose file shares. User quotas give you the option to better monitor and control costs. You pay for only the resources used, with no upfront costs, or licensing fees.
Benefits
Native Windows compatibility
Built on Windows Server, Amazon FSx supports Windows-native file system features such as Access Control Lists (ACLs), shadow copies, and user quotas to help you move your applications to AWS with minimal disruption. Amazon FSx provides NTFS file systems that can be accessed from up to thousands of compute instances using the SMB protocol. Amazon FSx works with Microsoft Active Directory (AD) to easily integrate your file system with your Windows environments.
Fast and flexible performance
Built on SSD-storage, Amazon FSx provides fast performance with up to 2 GB/second throughput per file system, hundreds of thousands of IOPS, and consistent sub-millisecond latencies. To provide the right performance for your workload, you can choose a throughput level that is independent of your file system size. By using DFS Namespaces, you can scale performance up to tens of gigabytes per second of throughput, with millions of IOPS, across hundreds of petabytes of data.
Broadly accessible
By supporting the SMB protocol, Amazon FSx can connect your file system to Amazon EC2, VMware Cloud on AWS, Amazon WorkSpaces, and Amazon AppStream 2.0 instances. Amazon FSx supports all Windows versions starting from Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7, and current versions of Linux. Amazon FSx also supports on-premises access via AWS Direct Connect or AWS VPN, and access from multiple VPCs, accounts, and regions using VPC Peering or AWS Transit Gateway.
Simple and Fully managed
You no longer have to worry about setting up and provisioning file servers and storage volumes, replicating data, installing Windows file server software updates and patches, managing failover and failback, and manually performing backups. In minutes, you can easily create a fully managed file system in a single AZ or across multi-AZs by using the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, or an AWS SDK. Amazon FSx also provides automatic durable daily backups.
Secure and compliant
Amazon FSx provides multiple levels of security and compliance to help ensure your data is protected. Amazon FSx automatically encrypts your data at-rest and in-transit. Amazon FSx is designed to meet the highest security standards and it has been assessed to comply with ISO, PCI-DSS, and SOC certifications, and is HIPAA eligible. Integration with AWS CloudTrail monitors and logs your API calls letting you see actions taken by users on your Amazon FSx resources.
Cost-effective
You pay only for the resources you use, with no minimum commitments or up-front fees. Launch and delete file systems in minutes, making it easy to respond to changing business needs. You can optimize costs by removing redundant data with Data Deduplication. User quotas provide tracking, monitoring, and enforcing of storage consumption to help reduce costs. Amazon FSx is fully managed, and reduces the time and resources needed to manage your file storage.
How it works
Use cases
Home directories
Many organizations have home directories and team shares. These organizations typically need shared access to common data sets with hundreds or thousands of users. You can use Amazon FSx for Windows File Server to create a file system that is accessible by up to hundreds of thousands of users, and establish permissions at the file or folder level. You can easily move existing home directory workloads to Amazon FSx.
Lift-and-shift application workloads
Many Windows-based applications and workloads, such as ERP, CRM, and custom-built .NET applications, require shared file storage provided by Windows-based file systems (NTFS) and that use the SMB protocol. Amazon FSx is built on Windows Server and provides you with the native Windows file system features and performance that your applications need from a file store. By providing fully managed native Windows file shares with features like Microsoft AD integration and automatic backups, you can easily migrate Windows-based applications to AWS.
Media and entertainment workflows
Media workflows like media transcoding, processing, and streaming often depend on shared Windows file storage with consistent performance. Amazon FSx for Windows File Server provides you with a shared file system with the high throughput and low latencies these Windows workloads require.
Data analytics
Data analytics applications consume a high volume of data from a variety of sources, and typically require access from tens to thousands of compute instances. By providing scalable file systems with high throughput and low latencies, Amazon FSx enables you to run data-intensive analytics workloads including business intelligence, data visualization applications, and High Availability (HA) Microsoft SQL Server deployments.
Web serving and content management
Content management and web serving applications, like Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) and WordPress, store and serve files for websites and internal portals. These applications use shared file storage because multiple web or content servers typically need access to the same files. Amazon FSx is ideal for these workloads because it provides a file system that can be accessed across thousands of instances simultaneously.
Software development environments
Software development environments include source code and build repositories that reside on shared file storage to support many developers working on the same projects. Amazon FSx enables you to easily move to in-cloud development with no changes to your development workflows by providing shared file storage that is accessible to your developers and their environments.
