General

Q: How can I leverage review HealthLake Imaging?
A: You can use Amazon HealthLake Imaging as the data management layer of your medical imaging applications and reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) of your data. HealthLake Imaging optimizes your medical imaging data and stores a single, authoritative copy of each image that can be used to drive all of your application features. This means that when creating de-identified copies of an image, pixel data is not copied, saving you storage costs. HealthLake Imaging does this by providing access control at the metadata level, and exposing specific attributes of each image (e.g., patient ID, modality) to applications based upon these customer-configured permissions. For example, a cloud PACS with decision support software will read from the same copy of the data used for disaster recovery and by scientists collaborating on academic research.

Q: What medical imagery does HealthLake Imaging support?

A: HealthLake Imaging supports DICOM®, the international standard for the communication and management of medical imaging information.

Security & compliance

Q: How does HealthLake Imaging help protect sensitive information in medical image data?

A: HealthLake Imaging is a part of Amazon HealthLake, a HIPAA-eligible service that offers a complete view of individual or population health data for analytics at scale, and customers of HealthLake Imaging can be confident that all health information is protected. HealthLake Imaging provides access control at the metadata level, ensuring that each user and application can only see the images and metadata fields that are required based upon their role. This prevents the proliferation of Patient Protected Health Information. All access to HealthLake Imaging APIs is logged in detail and for review in AWS CloudTrail.

Q: How can I transfer my existing on-premises imaging data to HealthLake Imaging?

A: You can easily import from Amazon S3. Customers that are independently managing large archives of DICOM data on-premises can use AWS DataSync, AWS Storage Gateway, or the AWS Snow Family to migrate these archives into Amazon S3 and call HealthLake Imaging ingest APIs to optimize the data for clinical use. Customers with enterprise PACS systems can work with their ISV parters to assist in migrations to HealthLake Imaging.
