Jonathan joined AWS as an Enterprise Strategist & Evangelist in May 2017. In this role, he works with enterprise technology executives around the globe to share experiences and strategies for how the cloud can help them increase speed and agility while devoting more of their resources to their customers.
Jonathan's AWS goals
Whenever Jonathan speaks with customers about cloud strategy, he starts by talking about people, processes, and technology. He finds that the latter two are typically more straightforward to plan and that they also begin and end with people. So, a question he often asks, and asked himself while UK CTO at Capital One, is how are we going to enable our people to benefit as much, and as fast as possible, from the cloud?
Jonathan's expertise
For Jonathan, putting his focus on people has meant the role of a technology leader is as much that of a psychologist as a technologist. It is of utmost necessity to understand the underlying motivations that drive your teams—what makes them resist, and what makes them act. It’s a lot more than just training your team to be ready for cloud—it’s about giving them the autonomy to do their job as they want, the room for mastery of their craft, and a defined purpose that allows them to have a positive impact through their work. He got to put that thinking into practice at Capital One, where he was part of a leadership team that decided to adopt the AWS cloud. He was then able to lead that adoption inside the company.
Jonathan's outreach
Jonathan shares those lessons, and more, from his past leadership roles at events all around the world and also closer to your screen via the AWS Enterprise Strategy Blog. Catch him live at one of his upcoming events or connect with him online in his social media channels.

As a previous customer and current enterprise strategist for Amazon Web Services (AWS), I’ve seen that although no two companies are the same, IT challenges are extremely similar across the industry spectrums.
Financial institutions are already leveraging the scale and agility of the AWS Cloud to build data lakes, run large scale analytics, and accelerate machine learning adoption. More recently, they are also using services like AWS PrivateLink to connect and transfer data both within their own organization and with other organizations with a presence in the AWS Cloud. AWS PrivateLink uses AWS’s internal network connectivity instead of the public internet to ensure secure connectivity (think of it like a virtual cross connect). Not only are financial data providers such as Bloomberg leveraging AWS PrivateLink to distribute real-time market data to its customers, but financial regulators such as FINRA are also leveraging AWS PrivateLink as a connectivity option for broker-dealers to securely send their order and transaction data to comply with the CAT reporting regulation.
Many modern enterprises are a maelstrom of emotions, facts, opinions, and in many cases, outright competition both inside and outside of the organization. The bigger the business, the bigger the challenge for leaders to set and execute a common strategy. This is especially true when looking to reap the benefits of moving to Cloud. When you suddenly remove a huge amount of undifferentiated heavy lifting, pay attention to being customer-obsessed, and focus on the data and logic required of technology to deliver this end, some people are going to feel intimidated at best and hostile at worst for what this means to them personally. This FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) can be magnified in the move to Cloud, because it cuts across so many paradigms and existing job roles.
