Amazon RDS Automated Backups Can Now Be Retained After Database Deletion

Posted on: Nov 15, 2018

You can now retain Amazon RDS automated backups (system snapshots and transaction logs) when you delete a database instance. This allows you to restore a deleted database instance to a specified point in time within the backup retention period even after it has been deleted, protecting you against accidental deletion of data.

When you choose to retain automated backups after a database instance is deleted, Amazon RDS also saves the database instance properties to make it easy to recover. Automated backups are automatically deleted at the end of the specified backup window, just as they are for an active database instance.

You can easily view the list of your automated backups in the AWS Console for both active and deleted database instances. You can restore or remove automated backups using the AWS Console, AWS API or AWS Command Line Interface. This feature is available for the MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server database engines.

Refer to the Amazon RDS User Guide for more information.
