I tried to close my AWS account, but I got an error. Why can't I close my AWS account?

Only someone signed in as the root user of an AWS account can close that account. If you're signed in as an IAM user, sign out of the account and sign in as the root account user, or contact the root account user to ask them to close the account on your behalf. For more information about the difference between root credentials and IAM credentials, see Root Credentials vs. IAM User Credentials.

If you're trying to close an organization's master account, you must unlink any member accounts before closing your account; see Removing a Member Account from Your Organization.

If those steps don't work, try using a different web browser.

If you're still unable to close your account, contact AWS Support for help.

Note: For privacy and security purposes, AWS customer service cannot close accounts on request.
