The image contains just enough packages to run within AWS, bring up an SSH Server and allow users to login. Please note that this is the default Ubuntu 16.04 with SQL image that we recommend everyone uses. The AMI also comes pre-installed with .NET Core 2.0, PowerShell 6 and the AWS .NET SDK to run your .NET Core applications. By running SQL Server 2017 with Ubuntu 16.04 on EC2, you can leverage the cost effectiveness, scalability and flexibility of Amazon EC2, the proven reliability, predictability and speed of Ubuntu. It contains packages that are updated at points in time to include critical security updates.

Frontline maintains this AMI on a quarterly basis to provide essential updates. Frontline also updates the AMI on a quarterly basis to enable usage for all supported instance types.
