This Free Tier listing carries no KohaSupport software charge. You pick one of six EC2 instance sizes to run Koha, billed by the hour. The six options—t2.micro, t3.micro, t3a.small, t3.small, t3.medium, and t3a.medium—are not tiers but server sizes with differing compute and memory. Larger instances suit heavier evaluation workloads. AWS infrastructure charges apply separately and are billed by AWS based on the instance you run, storage, and networking. The Free Tier is meant for evaluation, training, and small pilots, with limits on records and items.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do the six instance options mean, and how do I choose one?
Each option is an Amazon EC2 virtual server size, differing in compute and memory. The t2.micro and t3.micro are the smaller sizes; t3a.small, t3.small, t3.medium, and t3a.medium give more capacity. Pick a larger size for heavier evaluation or training workloads. You can change size later.
Am I charged for the instance when it is stopped or powered off?
The Free Tier carries no KohaSupport software charge, so no software fee accrues either way. AWS bills its own infrastructure charges based on the running instance, storage, and networking. A fully stopped instance stops accruing compute charges, but attached storage may still incur AWS fees. All usage appears in your AWS billing console.
What is not included in the Free Tier that I should plan around?
The Free Tier is meant for evaluation, training, and small pilots. It limits bibliographic records and items, though patrons and branches are unlimited. AWS infrastructure charges are billed separately by AWS. Managed Services, migration help, and setup support are not included and are available separately.
