Use Amazon's native Ubuntu image, not the Marketplace version

The same Ubuntu Server release is available in non-Marketplace form. It is much better to use that than the Marketplace version.

This is because AWS applies restrictions to Marketplace AMIs that prevent you from mounting the images as as anything other than the root device. These restrictions are presumably intended as a form of "copy protection" for commercial AMIs. However, they have the side-effect that you cannot mount the filesystem from another instance to fix boot errors or to recover files.

In addition, the non-Marketplace version comes pre-configured to use Amazon's local mirrors for updates, whereas the Marketplace version (at least the Toyko version) does not.
