AWS Storage Gateway is easy to setup though it has very difficult structure.
So I recommend this Image for everyone.

AWS Storage Gateway fourth impressions

Last year I did a blog post about AWS storage gateway initial (first, second and third) impressions.

I recently tried out the AWS Storage Gateway to assess its functionality and applicability for various use scenarios. As part of trying out the storage gateway, I tested it in cached and storage modes installed into VMs on an VMware ESXi server. I also tested it using the AWS AMI version.

Some thoughts and perspectives:
I would prefer if the gateways allowed storage access via NAS (NFS and CIFS/SMB) in addition to iSCSI. For what I wanted to use it for which is allowing different servers or systems to move or access storage in AWS, I ended up using a Windows Server to mount the iSCSI volume and then create a share for the servers to access the volume. A work around would be to create multiple iSCSI volumes and present those to various servers that can access them.

Reporting could also be better to see or view where your data goes into S3 when using cached mode. Viewing snapshots is straight forward using EC2/EBS console viewing tools. However, data going into S3 stores is not visible with current reporting tools.

Would also be nice to be able to indicate S3 stores to be migrated to Glacier, or, have the ability to tell the gateway to move data into Glacier for archiving or other uses.

AWS does a good job during the setup and install to give some basic info on costs, pay attention to those notes as well as other details during the install.

Thanks to AWS support. I had an issue during installation and issued a tweet saying I was giving AWS storage gateway an "I" for incomplete grade. Within an hour an unsolicited email from AWS support arrived asking how they could help and from there we got it working.

When doing your homework for solution to move or access data to/from AWS, check out the AWS gateway which for iSCSI environments could be a contender for you.

Will put some other info on my blog, which can be seen on my author’s page as well as via Kindle when I get a chance.

Cheers gs
