this Amazon Machine Image is very handy to install CentOS 6.5 x86_64, not only t1.micro, t2.micro instance should be supported.

I love to use AWS as a cloud services, simple use for beginner and Centos6.5 is a good combination to build a good system. standard functional of OS and security services that AWS provide is easy to setting

Good image but needs a couple basic things.

The CentOS image worked well for me but keep in mind you will need to install a few things to get it usable. See below:

Install VIM Text Editor
yum install vim

Install wget
yum install wget

The usage instructions could be refined. They use 'ec2-user' as a group name and a user name. I would of preferred 'ec2-group' for group name so that it is easier to distinguish between them. Also this statement 'groupadd –g <500> <ec2-user>' shouldn't have a space between -g and <500>.

Finally, if you going to use Amazons Security Groups, you might want to turn off iptables since two firewalls could be a problem. Here's how:

At your Linux command line -
Turn off iptables:
[root@ip-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx ~]$ service iptables stop

Set Firewall not to start after reboot:
[root@ip-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx ~]$ chkconfig iptables off

Check status of iptables:
[root@ip-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx ~]$ service iptables status

The CentOS you know and love

We were setting up a webserver instance. CentOS is one of the most common Linux versions used for web servers and so it was the obvious choice. It works as you would expect CentOS to work, and doesn't cost any extra to run (unlike RHEL or SLES).

It is stable and supports all current commonly used additional Apache modules

The only thing that would make me rate it higher is if CentOS were to introduce a management system for CentOS similar to Yast in SUSE.

HVM Variants

AMI itself is solid, we've used it a lot.

It would be very helpful if we could have HVM variants of the current product (6.5) at least so that we could use the t2 series, etc.

Also, what's the prospect for 7.0? I'm hearing you're planning to do some sort of automation rather than distribute AMIs ... can you clarify the general outlines of the plan?

It would be great not to use Marketplace for official but no charge AMI's, because the Marketplace copy protections slows data recovery in emergencies (because you cannot remount the volumes and fix them)

Very good product

Even having very basic knowledge on setting-up Linux-based OS, I was able to get this product installed and working with no hitch. An existing project had been migrated and it worked instantly, all the needed package are available.

Great stable image

The root partition doesn't resize to full size if you chose a different partition size than 8 GB while you create a new instance. Not sure it is Amazon or image issue. It can be resized after the instance is launched.
No other issues, the image is good.

Thank you.

Only one issue that drops to four stars. If you are using for running a website, you need to add the following to iptables:

-I INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
