Excellent as usual

I've been using CentOS for years now, and was previously forced to use third party packagers on AWS. Now that there are official Centos AMI, no more backthoughts about security issues in the software.

Really good ami (good for customization)

Plain not modified centos, just as i was use to from our prior physical servers.

I like that is a really minimal system, that your can customize to your needs.

Solid experience, however not configured for additional storage

Tested this image- solid, except:

Additional EBS 40GB storage of the c3.xlarge machine is NOT available as /dev/xvd. or /dev/sd. disk, even though the volume IS attached to the instance.

PS: The CentOS image supplied by Bashton will mount the additional volume on /media/ephemeral0.

No Instructions Whatsoever

Supposedly this should have been a one-click installation after which i could just go to my-ip:2087. At the end I couldnt get there even after installing the software and turning on the web server. There is ZERO help online for this.

CentOS and other Linux VMs

Just thought I give this a trail before committing fully into buying it. Even though it might be more expensive for the average user than most third party hosts, the value we got so far does really measure up :-
1. Very secure environment. Key exchange for SSH for example.
2. Console to manage and reboot the instances. This is especially helpful if you messed up an install and the instance doesn't come right back on.
3. The Linux distros are all clean. LAMP etc are fully under the instance owners control to configure from scratch. For the average user this might be a setback, but I found managing Apache etc myself rather than relying on cPanel gave me much better control on the memory and resource usage.
4. Full control on billing, with alerts on usage and more

For people who are used to cPanel, there are free alternatives which could be installed. It is also possible to install a desktop allowing mstsc to RDP to the linux install (lxde works very well).

One thing to note, when setting up the instance - MAKE SURE TO DOWNLOAD THE PRIVATE KEYS SINCE YOU ONLY HAVE ONE CHANCE!

lack of new instances support, not re-attachable EBS

  • January 28, 2014

It's kinda abandoned, it doesn't have support for new types of instances and you can't re-attach the EBS to another instance to recover data or failure.

Not suitable for production (that's a shame because it's an official release)

Top-notch, cost-free, enterprise-level Linux AMI

If you're looking for a full-blown, enterprise-level Linux AMI that won't cost you anything extra, you've found the right one. It is much better than the Amazon Linux AMI that seems to be watered down and missing some key capabilities (like CIFS) without having to hack it. So far we're very satisfied with this AMI.

DO NOT USE CentOS AMIs from AWS Marketplace!!!!

If the EBS boot volume can't boot for any reason, there is no way to fix it, or copy data from it. AWS Marketplace AMIs CAN NOT be attached to another instance as a secondary volume for debug or data retrieval. Completely unacceptable in my opinion, and there is no reason for it because CentOS is open source.

There are many CentOS community AMIs which do not have this restriction I suggest AMIs from Bashton (http://www.bashton.com/blog/2013/centos-6-4-ami-available/); I've also had good results with the RightImage CentOS AMIs.

It is centos, and works great. What more can be said about it. It's centos just like you would expect.

Can't attach root volume as secondary volume

  • January 15, 2014
  • Review verified by AWS Marketplace

I would of said this was great but I have one issue with it which is quite major.

The problem I have is that if you need to detach the root volume and attach it to another instance as a secondary volume it will not allow you to do to it's marketplace settings.

You might one day need to access the root volume to fix a critical problem like forgotten password, iptables blocking access or DHCP not starting. To do this you might use a working instance and attach the root volume as a secondary volume so you can edit the root filesystem and fix this issue. Due to security constraints enabled (or not disabled) by the developer you can't do this.
