Barracuda Email Security Gateway in Higher Education

What do you like best about the product?
The support from Barracuda is the best in the business. We like the Email Security Gateway and its features. We run ours virtually on VMware which is nice, because we can back it up using Veeam and it does not take up more server rack space. Incoming emails can also be run through the Barracuda Cloud Email solution before it hits our on-site VM appliance. This can take some of the load off of the on-site unit.
What do you dislike about the product?
We would like to be able to change the VMware resources allocated to it to give it more CPUs and RAM.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It helps us eliminate the hundreds of thousands of spam, scams, and malware coming in to our email users. Without it our users email inboxes would be so full of junk that we could not carry on business in an very efficient way at all. Looking at its dashboard surprises most of our users as to just how much junk we are attempted to be bombarded with daily.

What do you like best about the product?
Barracuda ESG is extremely easy to manage and intuitive to use. Message logs are easily accessible, custom configurations are easy to implement.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not the best at filtering out spam. We have 20-30 spam emails that get through each week.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The tool helps prevent our users from falling victim to phishing attacks by filtering out 90% of malicious emails.

What do you like best about the product?
Some sites were blocked from students...it was important to keep inappropriate content from students
What do you dislike about the product?
Some sites were blocked for no reason...and the blockage was inconsistent
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It keeps certain content away from students...it probably kept students on task to a certain extent by keeping them from sites such as shopping, streaming video, and gaming.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Inform users of the different types of websites that could be blocked...especially ones that you might now expect would be blocked.

What do you like best about the product?
I like that it gives me the option to whitelist some of the emails.
What do you dislike about the product?
That sometimes it takes a day for my to see my spam folder. Also, if i file is too big for my inbox it doesnt tell me.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I dont get a lot of spam emails any more, which is great!

What do you like best about the product?
This is the best defense for spam on your E-mail server that money can buy. It's very powerful and can be configured on a granular level if you like.
What do you dislike about the product?
The UI isn't completely Robust, but once you get used to it it's great!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Phishing and malware intrusions are being blocked immensely, which is lessening the strain on our AV. This is no substitute but a great item to team on your network

What do you like best about the product?
I like that we have very few problems with the BEG--and that it 'evolves'. Whitelisting domain is a snap, and the number of false positives we have is relatively small. We have few complaints about spam--and generally, it's attributable to our domain policies (blocking specific countries/regions) and the Barracuda email filter.
What do you dislike about the product?
It does crash sometimes, and when it does--it hurts (all email stops). Plus we had an issue for a while when our Exchange servers were getting low on available space the Barracuda would suddenly get really high queues, and email deliveries would be delayed. Supposedly this issue has been fixed, but time will tell.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
A significant drop in spam, including a robust ability to block domains, and regions. It frees up time for the Admins to, well, administrate!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be mindful of the hardware you're running it on and the resources you're giving it! If you can afford to get the appliance you'll be better off, but even as a VM it works pretty well.

Keeping the bad out!

What do you like best about the product?
This product does a great job and minimizing our exposure to malware and virus laden spam.
What do you dislike about the product?
It can keep important emails form reaching us, but it has been adaptable and made more accessible to use.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are inundated with spam, this product has allowed us to keep our emails clean and yet is versatile to work with out IT to ensure we get the right communications.

What do you like best about the product?
the site is easy to navigate - i am usually able to recover my archieved emails in a matter of minutes with all of the different filter options. it is nice to be able to clear out my email inbox since that runs out of space so frequently.
What do you dislike about the product?
UI is outdated - the overall look and feel of the archiever makes it feel like it is 1990. i like the blue tones but the font and setup is very outdated. the font also hurts my eyes. the prerences tab also doesnt make any sense, it just allows you to go to the password page.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
sometimes our emails get blocked when they dont necessarily need to be, but i am sure our IT depeartment would not consider this an issue. Similiar issue with websites in that some are blocked when they don't need to be.

Secure, Safe and Reasonable

What do you like best about the product?
We used Barracuda email security for at least 5 years at my job (Im still not sure why we switched)  First let me say that the spam filtering works exactly as it should when configured correctly.
That said, sometimes its hard to find a balance between white listing everything and white listing nothing. I have to also say, the Barracuda support team is top notch and one of the best I have ever dealt with.
What do you dislike about the product?
The process of tweaking the whitelist can be a bit frustrating, but that is going to be true with any type of solution for this matter. I cant think of anything else that I do not like about this solution.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have cut down on spam. Workers are more productive and our inboxes have remained secure and safe from hoaxes and virus attacks.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
dont give up. tweak the whitelist. This is a great product when used properly
