Honest trailer - Mendix

  • November 16, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best?
Integration with other web services, especially SOAP based, but also other RESTful services, is extremely streamlined. Data structures and web service calls are auto-generated, and sending of files via different protocols is supported without any extra effort.
What do you dislike?
The App Store is critical to meeting customer expectation, because it features hundreds of ready-to-use components. The problem is that some of the components are not-updated regularly by their owners, and since Mendix is not the owner, support for these components is hard to come by.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Our company uses Mendix to empower customers to digitilize their business model and innovate in the digital realm by providing new, unique and competitive features. So far I have participated in three projects for three separate customers. For all of them, we have been able to deliver beautiful and functioning apps in record times, reducing the time from idea to production ready application to just a few months.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are attempting to break new grounds and conquer emerging markets, Mendix gives you the ability to quickly test out your ideas before making a serious commitment. If the requirements are uncertain and they are constantly changing, Mendix empowers developers to react quickly and stay agile during the development process.

Great app development platform that minimises the gap between business and IT

  • November 09, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best?
I love the speed at which you can develop when using the Mendix platform. Because of the visual way of building logic in Mendix, it is very easy to collaborate with non-IT related roles from the business. This results in applications that really fit with the business and the future users of the application. What I also like is that back-end developement and styling go hand-in-hand when using the Mendix platform. Of course everyone has their own expertise, but front-end and back-end are no longer two worlds apart. Mendix has great tooling to set up a basic theme for your application based on your company colours in just a few minutes. So even when you're not a styling expert, your apps will look good.
What do you dislike?
Mendix has a lot of 'out-of-the-box' functionality, which in itself is great because in general increases the velocity of your app development. What I don't like about it is that the functionality is sometimes not flexible enough and in those situations it takes quite a lot of time to find a work-around.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Mendix can solve a great variety of business problems. It is great at intergrating with existing applications and software. WIth Mendix I've built several flexible shells on top of existing application landscapes, for example; I built a sels-service-portal for a logistics company on top of their SAP environment. Mendix is also great for building apps that are very specific for your business. The general software environments are often not flexibel enough to please the needs of the business. To start building apps from scratch in Java or .NET for example often comes with too much maintenance for a company. For these kind of business cases I've also used Mendix to do the job.

Just try it and you'll be convinced!

Mendix, a great solution for your company

  • November 08, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best?
Mendix provides a quick solution to build apps and let you preview your application from the start. It's a great way to show your progress to the client each time you make changes.
What do you dislike?
For some companies, the price is a big obstacle. But the one who makes the decision, quickly knows that it was all worth it.

Also, the default design of the elements is workable, but a bit stale. To create amazing templates it requires some knowledge of HTML, CSS or SASS.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
We use Mendix as a platform, to implement business applications solving our customer's problems
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's free! Just give it a shot!

Solid rapid application platform

  • November 03, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best?
The speed of development in Mendix is incredible. Espcially startup of a project is done quickly. If you are using Mendix Cloud hosting, the CI is up-to-speed within minutes.
What do you dislike?
At the moment publishing of REST services is not a native functionality. Custom Java modules are required. Additionally, webservice versioning is not supported.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Development of prototype for specific use cases (experiments), integration bus for eCommerce, custom ERP, website backend.

Solid platform for rapidly building business applications

  • September 05, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best?
Mendix takes a lot of the guesswork out of building business applications. They have a very solid framework for creating efficient databases, integrating with the databases and building various workflows (using microflows) to enable users to accomplish their goals. The app builder (Modeler) is very intuitive and makes it quite easy to visually prototype an app, gain agreement, then fully code the app. This process does not require a traditional, highly-skilled developer to get started.

Mendix has a lot of integrations, great out-of-the-box UI components, native mobile and responsive capabilities, and a variety of ways to extend core functionality including the use of Java and Javascript.

In addition to the development environment, their cloud hosting is also extremely convenient and quite worry-free for most applications.
What do you dislike?
What I dislike is less about the technology and more about the challenge it is to find developers with Mendix experience. While there are millions of Java or .Net developers in the world, there are thousands of Mendix developers. They are hard to come by and when you find them, they're costly. So what you might save in rapid development, you give (at least somewhat) in resource costs. Over time I would expect that to get better.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
We have mainly been focused on building internal applications to improve and automate various business processes. In some cases the ROI is around needing fewer people to handle an increased workload (first application resulted in a 3x productivity gain). In others, the result is eliminating n external vendor application that was simply not integrated into anything else (reducing multiple-entry situations, increasing data quality, eliminating licensing costs). We've also found that we can be much more nimble with turn-around, nor only related to reduced reliance on external vendors, but with development cycles that are typically based on 2 week sprints.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Before jumping in, test it out an a very specific, small, time-bound project. It's easy to do that and will give you a real feel for what you should experience in the future. If you have in-house development staff, they will likely be apprehensive about Mendix. However, business stakeholders will love the ability to "see" the process unfold before their eyes.

Mendix can't solve every problem so be sure it's right for what you're trying to accomplish. If you have a focus on improving business processes, then it could be an amazing fit. If you're trying to integrate disparate systems, it could also work well. If you're trying to build a consumer-facing website or portal, there may be better solutions that will cost much less and get you there faster. So know what you're trying to do and see if it works.

Last thing, it will be a culture change and you have to be ready for change management.

    Insurance

Very satisfactory

What do you like best?
Mendix platform allows me to create web applications very fast by aiming the focus on business rules rather than dealing with plumbing code. This is great when the requirements are not clear from the beginning and the final product is created iteratively. Mendix is great for fast prototyping, which could bring customer ideas into reality without the hassle of writing lots of code.
What do you dislike?
It is common for frameworks to impose certain ground rules to be followed by developers and Mendix is not the exception. Sometimes you need to do bend those rules and it could be kind of hacking.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Mendix is helping us on delivering insurance applications that go in sync with fluctuating market demands. Those days were product delivery was most of the time behind the current market needs are virtually over.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Mendix definitively will make your development efforts more productive. Platform is very stable and relatively easy to use. I would recommend give Mendix a try.
