Just install kali-linux-default and you get your tools

There is no GUI. You need to set up VNC or some other remote access setup if you want that. A lot of comments complain about nmap, other tools not being installed... The Kali Linux installer runs sudo apt install kali-linux-default by default, but you can do that with this AMI and get everything you want. It's an AMI, a base image. It expects you to install what you need, like any other AMI. It does what it needs to do.

It seems to flag behind Kali Linux releases, however. Kali Linux 2020.3 has been released for about a week and this AMI has not yet been updated. But 5 days isn't so long, I imagine it will be updated soon.

To add to what has been said, below are a list of steps that might help people looking for getting the set up done quickly: After logging in: sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main non-free contrib deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main non-free contrib save the sources.list after adding the above lines and then: sudo apt-get update sudo apt install kali-linux-default Follow through the prompted instructions. In most cases default selections would do.
