Ubuntu Is Great

  • December 31, 2019
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ease of entry and using the software as a developer compared to windows

For basic development and development software, Ubuntu is easy to get started. When I moved to ubuntu, the best thing about it at that point was how easy it was for me to install LAMP in just a matter of minutes. It was also very easy to upgrade too.
What do you dislike about the product?
Softwares are not readily available unlike macOS or Windows. Apart from those, ubuntu is great entirely. Another problem might be the software for working with documents.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use ubuntu in my day to day work in developing enterprise applications
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's the best software out there!

It is the heart of solving solutions in the company. I am using ubuntu as my operating system for developing softwares.

What do you like best about the product?
The best part of Ubuntu is the ability to modify or customize the OS according to preference.. and the activity monitor works like a charm to check what apps are using more RAM.
What do you dislike about the product?
Needs more work on the Visual side of OS
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Windows is bloated and macs are expensive.. Also Ubuntu is opensource.. so it a great community to be in.

The Windows alternative you should go to first if you are used to proprietary OS

What do you like best about the product?
Much is made about Ubuntu being OpenSource, but for a lot of people coming from Windows that is a cause for concern because they feel like its an amatuer project. Ubuntu is produced by Canonical an actual company who forked off of the Debian Project, as a result they direct the overall design of the project and work with other projects that they incorporate into their OS. Yes people are allowed to look at the source code and submit changes for consideration, as well as help them iron out bugs. Each year they produce a long term release in April which they offer support for several years; as well as a test release in October of things that will likely be featured the following April. So do not let this arrangement prevent you from switching from Windows.
What do you dislike about the product?
The OS is far less resource intensive than Windows which makes it great for extending the life of aging machines that would have grinded to a laggy mess otherwise. The biggest hurdle you will experience is having to use the terminal to download programs from the repositories, but these are often provided by the software’s creator, so all you need to do is copy and paste it into the terminal and it is no more dangerous than installing it any other way.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I would highly recommend this OS to anyone looking for a smooth, easy to use user experience and doubly so if they are on other hardware.

A better view from your "Windows"....!!

What do you like best about the product?
The operating system experience is solid and is far better experience than what you can get on windows. 1. The UI is minimalist but with great emphasis on ease of use and access.
2. Ubuntu 19.04 is one of the fastest GNOME I've used.
3. The app support is really awesome and with the current updates you can enjoy a lot more games as the graphics support has increased.
4. The whole operating system feels more snappier and snazzy than before.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are still some bugs present from the previous versions like :
1. You can't minimize an app by clicking the app icon instead you need to click on the minimize button to minimize the app!
2. The concept of multiple desktops doesn't seem to work as the app remains open in the current desktop too.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The hefty amount which I was paying for my Windows OS is gone. The support forum is really helpful and content oriented which makes me solve my issues with ease. This was not possible with windows as their troubleshooting doesn't seem to work always and the price I used to pay for support was huge.
The app support of Ubuntu GNOME is increasing day by day and now it supports almost all of the apps from Windows and MacOS.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are ready to give up the name of Windows and the app and graphics it supports then Ubuntu is the answer for you.
It is free and vastly customizable.
It has better security features as compared to Windows.
Best suited for development as compared to Windows as it comes with various programming languages and IDE pre-installed.
It comes with BASH pre-installed a developers paradise!!
My recommendation is if you have been using Windows for quite a time and is fed up with all the bloatware and sloppiness the Ubuntu is there for your rescue!

Great OS for developers, not recommended for Enterprise app developers who have Microsoft dependenci

  • December 03, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is the best option for developers as Ubuntu is Safe, secured, respects the organization's privacy. It is free so that the organization doesn't want to pay extra on OS maintenance. Ubuntu is a an open-source Linux distro so that the organization can customize it in the way they wanted. Mainstream IDEs like Android Studio and Intellij(Pycharm, Webstorm) works fine on Ubuntu when compared to an equivalent machine with windows OS.
What do you dislike about the product?
The major problem we are facing as an Enterprise application developing company is- Most of our clients have legacy databases and other systems that have Microsoft dependencies. In such cases, it is hard to integrate these systems with our working environments. Another issue with Ubuntu is- being the Linux distro with the largest community support Ubuntu lacks hardware compatibility(graphics drivers, printers, etc). Applications that need high GPU performance like Photoshop and AutoCAD shows glitches while running on Ubuntu.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Working on Development frameworks like 'Ruby on Rails' and 'Python', Ubuntu is the best OS that we can make use of. Setting up Ruby on Rails on windows is a big headache for every developer. Thus most of the RoR(Ruby on Rails) developers use Ubuntu as their OS by considering compatibility and organizational privacy.

Great User Experience

What do you like best about the product?
Ease of use and community LTS makes this distribution of Linux great. They are not afraid to try different things and still work on getting things write. It is a well known and popularly used distribution for server and desktop daily use. There are many options to find what you need that is not preloaded software on the system with little to no cost. There is better support now for hardware and games if that is something you wish to try out. I find it really useful for running network security software and suites to get consultant work done.
What do you dislike about the product?
Default version of python is still 2.x while that version is old and the current version is 3.x it is not the system default. There is not much I can say about this distro that is bad. I never really cared for the default side bar but it grows on you and you can change everything as needed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Free stable operating system that runs all the software I need for daily tasks and special use cases. Can run all my security suite tools plus other software needed to perform my job on a daily basis and great daily driver for personal use as well.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Start small. Try your hand at the Package Managers and tools you can use on the system out of the box. If you are new to linux use it as your daily driver for a few weeks before deciding on this distribution. Soon you will find it is easy to use and has a popular support base. There will be plenty of tutorials and others looking for similar answers to questions you may have and regular support for now and long term is expected.

What do you like best about the product?
I am using Ubuntu for past one and a half year. I use windows too, but found ubuntu more straightforward and generally less of a pain.
What do you dislike about the product?
The just thing I dislike about Ubuntu is its messaging menu and notification system.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The best thing I realized while using ubuntu is its command line interfacing and network interface. While using windows, I was stuck with a same issue which was rather solved with ubuntu.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This is the best operating system I had used till date. Not only it resolves network issues, but is also a open source platform and provides security as well.
