Solid product for large enterprises

  • August 19, 2019

What do you like best?
What I like most about denodo is the ability to scale fast. Because everything is a view the ability to create many abstraction layers across many disparate data source becomes very easy appose to other semantic layer development tools.
What do you dislike?
So far I have found the UI for the vdp admin tools not the best layout and navigating has been a little challenging compared to other dbms tools. That being said we are on version 7 and version 8 from a demonstration we had with the vendors have been greatly enhanced from a UX/UI perspective.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
We have a very large enterprise and are blending data across the enterprise. What denodo has helped us achieve is both federated and non federated data with the same reusable data structures. We accomplish this buy creating one off final interface for specific applications. This greatly reduces development time.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
A big pro of Denodo is easy of sharing of data across the enterprise. A big downside of denodo is it not a replacement for a COTS or Custom ETL tool. It can handle low level data cleansing and wrangling pretty well but does not perform heavy ETL well. That being said if most of your data reporting needs are real time pulls from data sources with data in the format-ish you want you will be fine.

Denodo Data Virtualization

  • January 23, 2019

What do you like best?
Denodo is best at creating a data virtualization layer caching and linking data between data source storage and end user data virtualization software. This software tool is especially brilliant when it comes to compatibility with various databases and file formats. Furthermore, it can quickly spin up a RESTful endpoint for data retrieval in different response data formats. Finally, Denodo also provides other web tools including the data catalog and diagnostic & monitoring tool which are both great supporting tools to manage the data that is being shared with the community and end users.
What do you dislike?
The limitation on community Denodo Express restricts the user to only a single administrator account which disables the properly of permission-based data access. This capability is rather important for deciding which user or groups is able to discover and gain access to a particular dataset. Meanwhile, with a single admin account, there is not much one can do to try out the multiple users and roles access control. Additionally, sometime it takes a few tries to launch the virtual data port server where the reason is unidentified.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Using Denodo as a data virtualization layer as its intended. The benefits are described in the like section above where the tool can quickly sync with a data source without much effort and create a RESTful or SOAP web services for end users.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
In the interest of organizing data for sharing, Denodo is a great tool.

Very Powerful DSP Product

What do you like best?
It is a very versatile platform, with a huge feature set from the get-go, but with an even greater set of capabilities as you dig deeper into the platform.
What do you dislike?
Many of my dislikes we resolved with the 5.5 release. There are a few opportunities for automation as the number of servers grow, and integration between Denodo and other programs or scripting languages, though robust, is not as versatile as I would like..
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
In general using Denodo as an ETL tool for a myriad of different data sources. We have found exposing our Denodo Web Services via an API Gateway has increased it's versatility with other products. It's a tool that I hope our company continues to use more and more as we delve deeper into it's capabilities.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure you on are at least on version 5.5. We upgraded from version 4.6 and saw huge improvements.
